The Outside Circle: A Movie of the Modern West delves into the mythologies and realities of the Modern West and its “landscape” today via the stories of Len Babb — a lifelong buckaroo and accomplished western artist, the Murphy family — fifth generation Oregon ranchers fighting to preserve their land and legacy, and Victoria Jackson — a Paiute-Shoshone rodeo champion whose family legacy in the Great Basin reaches back over 14,000 years. Determined to preserve their heritage, traditions, and livelihoods far from the cultural, political, and economic centers of wider America – on what working cowboys call The Outside Circle — the narratives find a common thread in their modest adherence to the values that have sustained them against the odds: faith, family, friends, and community.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: The mythology of the American Cowboy, and western ranching life, has long been overdue for an updated look. This film is a take on three modest, modern ranching families who continue to carve their livings out of some of the country’s most remote corners. It is a story of perseverance and humility, of the struggle to maintain not only traditions, but livelihoods, against enormous odds. Ultimately, it is a story of optimism as told by the people themselves. Each of the subjects in the film have deep roots in the stewardship of the land—some stretching back thousands of years–and the traditions that have been born from it. They are acutely aware of the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world but are determined to persevere in spite of them.
