Three members of San Diego metalcore band As I Lay Dying have abruptly quit the band, citing conflicts with personal ethics amid the band’s tumultuous history.
Guitarist Ken Susi, bassist Ryan Neff and drummer Nick Pierce released statements this week detailing the reasons for their departures, leaving only backups in the lineup Controversial frontman Tim Lambesis and guitarist Phil Sgrosso.
On October 24, Susie released a statement on social media, explaining that his morals had been “tested to the brink of collapse.”
“My time playing As I Lay Dying comes to an end today. I leave with a very grateful heart to everyone who has watched and supported me from my time at Unearth to this stage of my career. “I join AILD camp, fully aware of the dramatic history, but motivated to play great music with good friends. ”
He added, “Unfortunately, my personal ethics have been tested recently and this is probably the best second chance for this band, not the saddest ending.”
Bassist Ryan Neff left on October 18, after publishing an article calling it “the right step for me personally and professionally.”
Susie noted in a statement that Neff “received backlash for stepping down first.” He added: “I regret not sharing this decision sooner and stand confidently with my friend – a consummate musician and an even better person. I will miss everyone on this stage , and looking forward to seeing you on the next stage. Is anyone looking for a guitarist? My resume is ready.
Neff reflected in his statement, “As of today, I have decided to leave As I Lay Dying,” Neff wrote on Instagram. “This choice was made after careful consideration and I believe it is the right step for me personally and professionally. I am grateful for the experiences and connections I have made during my time in the band. Thank you to all the fans for their support.”
Drummer Nick Pearce also joined them in leaving, citing personal reasons in his own statement. “As of now, I am no longer playing drums on As I Lay Dying,” Pierce wrote. “This is far from the ending I expected and I feel I need to distance myself from the band in order to preserve my personal health and integrity.”
The band’s tour manager Alex Kendrick also announced his departure. Kendrick wrote in a now-deleted tweet: “I will no longer be working for the company as I die – I don’t want to be asked questions and I won’t answer any. I have made memories that will last a lifetime. , but my chapter of the book is done. I wish everyone the best of luck, and obviously I’m still rocking with Phil.
Founded in 2000, when i’m dying rose to fame as a Grammy-nominated act but became embroiled in controversy after Lambesis was arrested in 2013 and charged in 2014 with trying to hire a hitman to kill his then-wife Megan Lambesis He was sentenced to jail. Lambesis pleaded guilty in the case and served two years of a six-year sentence.
Following its 2016 release, the band reunited in 2018 with original members and new members. However, tensions remain. Former guitarist Nick Hippa, drummer Jordan Mancino and bassist Josh Gilbert left in 2020.
