TIFF 2024: Rumors: A baffling mix-up that was supposed to be just a rumor

I don’t mind watching bad movies as long as they have a good story to tell. But when you have a great cast, it becomes more exciting because there’s at least some hope. However, what do you get when you combine a great cast with a bad story, an unwatchable concept, and poor execution? A disaster. Believe me, rumor It’s worse than that.

Let’s start with the basics: I’m not even sure I can tell you what Guy Martin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson’s movie is about. Frankly, it took me weeks to come up with this sentence as the only polite way to describe the ordeal I had to endure. try to understand rumor It’s like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while blindfolded – impossible and headache-inducing.

Cate Blanchett plays the German chancellor in this absurdly satirical tale of a G-7 meeting of world leaders descending into chaos, in what I can only see as an attempt to challenge myself. And by losing control, I mean falling straight off a cliff into the abyss of absurdity. She joins a strong cast, but they’re wasted in this cinematic mess.

The movie is meant to be satirical, but the only thing it mocks is the audience’s intelligence. The G7 leaders are so hopelessly lost that they don’t even realize they’ve been abandoned by their aides. Instead of sharp political commentary, what we see is a chaotic mishmash of scenes, Room Looks like an Oscar contender. Can someone please explain who those creatures are that have apparently been masturbating? Because if that’s a metaphor, it flew so far over my head that it was probably in orbit.

For what feels like an eternity, the film stumbles through absurd settings filled with glowing brains, swamp people, and other ridiculous oddities. It was partly shot in black and white, which I think was meant to add some artistic flair, but instead added to the confusion. The fact that some of it was filmed in Winnipeg and Hungary? I thought this was supposed to be funny, but really, it’s just another confusing detail in an already confusing movie.

What’s the main takeaway here? Politicians can’t write speeches without speechwriters, and obviously filmmakers shouldn’t try to make a movie without a coherent script. rumor This movie should have been just that – a rumor that would never be seen, never watched, and certainly never believed.
