Following Australia’s Rachael Gunn (aka “b-girl Raygun”) announcing her retirement, the fiery Olympic hopeful made a surprise appearance alongside Australia’s Tones And I at their Melbourne show on Saturday (November 9) on stage.
The penultimate song Tones And I performed at Rod Laver Arena was “Dance With Me,” the fourth single from her 2024 album, Beautiful and Ordinary.
While the album topped the Australian ARIA charts, aside from her breakthrough single “Dance Monkey” (which peaked at No. 4 on the 2019 Hot 100 chart), Tones And I did not chart in the U.S. What success was achieved.
Tones And I incited the crowd, calling on viewers to “please give up Australian idol and most iconic breakdancer Raygun!”
The controversial Olympian took to the stage and shared her breakout skills throughout her performance, with all viewers recalling her viral appearance at the Paris Olympics.
After Raygun’s appearance, Tones And I shared a video of the encounter on social media and expressed her gratitude for the destroyer, calling her “the most beautiful, kind, and full of life I’ve ever met Vibrant human beings”
“It was an honor to celebrate you last night,” she added. “Thank you for sharing the stage with me and bringing smiles to so many people. You will always be my friend.
Raygun, a 37-year-old university lecturer from Sydney, shot to fame at the Paris Olympics in August after failing to score points in dance events including the kangaroo dance. The following month, the World DanceSport Federation issued a statement “clarifying” why Raygun was ranked high in the sport’s latest world rankings.
Their explanation showed that the ranking method is based on each athlete’s top four performances in the past 12 months, but does not include Olympic events including the Paris Olympics and the Shanghai and Budapest Olympic qualifiers.
She made headlines again earlier this month when reports emerged that she had announced her retirement from the sport.
She later publicly clarified that she would no longer compete, but did not quit competing entirely.
