We have some good (and very early) news about one of Netflix’s most popular shows.
Ahead of Virgin River’s sixth season premiering on December 19, the show has been renewed for a seventh season.
News of the renewal comes from Deadline, who note that the show is now on track to become Netflix’s longest-running series in history, as well as its longest-running English-language series.
Grace & Frankie and Orange Is the New Black both ran for seven seasons, but while the former was a comedy, the latter was submitted for awards consideration as a comedy in its first two seasons.
With this renewal, “Virgin River” will outlast Netflix classics such as “The Crown” and “House of Cards.”
The list of the streamer’s longest-running shows is mostly made up of 30-minute comedies like “The Ranch,” “BoJack Horseman” and “Full House,” making “Virgin River” a major exception.
Only the Spanish high school series Elite has been on the air longer, with eight seasons (but fewer episodes).
Of course, Virgin River’s success isn’t entirely shocking.
The show is based on a series of popular novels by Robin Carr. Anyone who has ever turned on the Hallmark Channel can attest to the popularity of small-town romance.
But the fact that “Virgin River” transcends the common tropes and limitations of the genre has helped the series develop a legion of loyal fans.
As for what will happen next for the long-suffering couple at the heart of the show, there’s no telling.
Mel and Jack got engaged in season four, and Netflix executives promised we’d see their wedding at some point in season six.
But you can bet there will be quite a few obstacles between these two lovebirds and the altar.
This is only the sixth season. With number seven on the horizon, it sounds like we’ll get to see at least another year of the couple’s new life as newlyweds.
It’s exciting stuff, and it’s nice to know that a show with a relatively low budget and a lack of big-name stars and action scenes can still achieve such success.
This story is almost as inspiring as the story of Mel and Jack.
