Vikings Season 6 picks up where the last season left off, offering more of the quaint western town, chemistry, and conflict that made the show so popular, albeit slowly. The first few episodes of the season were fairly slow-paced, spending a lot of time establishing the characters and foreshadowing future plot developments. However, the second half of the season was outstanding, resolving some of the season’s biggest conflicts, emotional moments, unexpected twists and plot twists, and suspenseful cliffhangers that kept viewers looking forward to the next season.
This season, Mel’s storyline is more about her personal life, as she finds her biological father, Everett Reed, a new character who helps her learn more about her past and herself. The flashback scene between Everett and Mel’s mother, which gives us a better understanding of why Mel is strong and vulnerable at the same time, is one of the best storylines of the season. The anger between Doc and Everett eventually came to light in the season finale, which took a toll on Mel throughout the series. Doc, on the other hand, endured one of the toughest tests of the season. After performing high-risk surgery in a fairly remote area with no backup, he now risks losing his medical license. At the same time, the future of his small practice was in jeopardy when the hospital announced its intention to expand into Virgin River. Hope’s insistence on mobilizing people for Doc gives a sense of hope and portrays the spirit of unity depicted in the series.
One of the storylines this season is Champaign’s long-awaited delivery of twin babies. She’s had several seasons to develop her character, and finally we see her become a mother, but it’s not as happy as it seems. After she seeks a restraining order against Calvin, she meets the twins’ father and drug lord Calvin, and things go from bad to worse. The finale reaches a climax when Charmaine disappears and Jack discovers a horrific scene in her home. Jack’s behavior in the final seconds of the show is somewhat ominous and sets the stage for something bad to happen in S7. There was a shocking moment that affected Muriel when she told everyone she had breast cancer. Muriel is so vulnerable in this scene that her character decides to fight her illness, and it adds a lot of emotion to the plot. Muriel’s story becomes a story about strength, friendship, and how relying on others in life’s most difficult situations isn’t always a bad thing.
Love triangles are a well-drawn plot this season, especially the one with Bree. Brady confesses his love, which causes problems between Bree and Mac; this leads to a proposal that puts Bree and the others in trouble. Brady’s storyline continues with Luck, who actually has a pretty shady past. It turns out that Skylark’s baby daddy is none other than Jimmy, the villain from previous seasons, and Bree witnesses her meeting him in prison. Although Brie felt her chemistry with Brady was genuine, when she learned Brady still loved Brie, Luck went back to con man mode, swindling Brady out of all his money, and then disappeared. This was a devastating blow to the injured Brady, which provided the foundation for how he could change and get better next season.
For Jack and Mel, the couple we cheer for, this season brings both the happy and sad parts of life. They still grieve the loss of their children and the inner demons of their past. They get a chance to become parents when Mel’s patient Marley comes to her to adopt her baby. This transition will bring new challenges to their relationship and a new beginning after getting married next season. The finale’s plot ties these narratives together in a way that’s uniquely Virgin River – while containing many happy moments, there’s also a cliffhanger that will keep viewers excited for the next season. Charmaine’s potential disappearance, Jack’s horrific discovery, Muriel’s cancer, Luck’s betrayal and the uncertainty of whether Mel and Jack will adopt Marley’s baby create an exciting plot for season seven.
Although some of the plot seemed a bit draggy at the beginning, the second half of the season was enough to leave a deep impression on the audience, proving that this is indeed a charming small town story full of twists and turns.
