A few months ago I decided to make a short film called “Brothers and Sisters” This is loosely based on two characters I wrote into the feature film of the same name. While there are many differences in story and style between the feature and the short I ended up making, the short was not intended to be a prequel or trailer to the feature, but rather an experimental platform to test some creative, technical and stylistic elements. For example, I wanted to bring our core cast together immediately to develop chemistry between them and help me learn their language and habits. I’d also like to try directing and DP’ing at the same time (using a Blackmagic Cinema Camera, which I rarely used before this shoot), and develop a RAW workflow for FCP X/DaVinci Resolve, which I’ll eventually use to edit and colorize the film. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and a great way to end the year.
Since the film was completed in December, it has been submitted to multiple film festivals and screened in Los Angeles. While I’m still waiting to hear back from most of the film festivals we submitted to, many readers of this site asked me to share the film after watching the trailer I posted a few months ago, so I’ve decided to post the full film online starting today Clip.
You ask, why should I post my film online when I’m trying to get into film festivals? There are many reasons. First, a short’s premiere status is not as important as a feature’s, so showing the film at this stage has little or no risk of closing any festival doors. Secondly, this isn’t my first short film – I’ve done several others and found that the response and results I got from sharing them online largely outweighed any festival experience I’ve had . The short films I make are often more experimental, and audiences looking to see this kind of content can find my work more easily on sites like vimeo than at local film festivals. I still plan to screen it at film festivals throughout the year and am very much looking forward to doing so, but to be honest, I’m more excited to now share it with a larger, more engaged audience as well as regular readers of this site.
Without further ado, let’s watch the video:
