Later this year, Resident Evil is getting another movie reboot, and some fans are worried about the alleged script that’s been circling the internet.

It’s no secret that we Resident Evil fans haven’t had it so good when it comes to live-action movie adaptations. I personally enjoy the animated movies, but Resident Evilfans are still missing a big screen experience that knocks their socks off.

As the script for the new Resident Evil movie has leaked, and while I take comfort in the fact that it’s supposedly set in the same world as Resident Evil 2and Resident Evil 3, the fact that it will be “a very comedy-heavy, slapstick sort of affair” concerns me. However, I have some hope that this attempt will get it right

Personally, I love how cheesy the Resident Evil video games can be. But for the most part, they’re also full of suspense and horror, key ingredients as to why they’ve been so successful for three decades.

This is why I have faith in the new Resident Evil movie – Zach Cregger, director of Barbarianand Weapons, is in charge of production. If anyone can get that balance right, it’s him! I just hope the movie doesn’t lean too heavily on the comedy – every director that has gone that route so far has ultimately lost focus on why fans love Resident Evil.

The otherResident Evil movies, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson are woeful. Thought, I must admit, Resident Evil: Apocalypse is my guilty pleasure, being a faithful Resident Evil 3 adaptation. Best of a bad bunch, perhaps.

Unlike all the previous movies, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was directed by Johannes Roberts. Despite the very poor Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine casting, I had some hope that this would be a decent movie, finally. After all, it looked to honour the

Sadly, this movie was a congested mess that lacked focus, trying to cram too much into one story. Leon S. Kennedy’s character, especially, had no personality traits of his video game counterpart.

Zach Cregger has said that while his Resident Evil movie won’t be directly influenced by the video games, it will be set in the same world.

That’s ok, as long as it does the Capcom series justice, something that I discussed with Leon S. Kennedy actor, Nick Aposalidis.

What Else Was Included in The Resident Evil Movie Script?

It’s not all doom and gloom with the latest Resident Evil reboot, because I am excited that it will be taking place in Raccoon City during the T-Virus outbreak. It will also have an original character played by Austin Abrams.

One of the reasons why I loved the co-op multiplayer Resident Evil Outbreak games is that it had multiple playable characters, each with their own story taking place in Raccoon City during the outbreak, and this is the kinda vibe I’m getting so far with Zach Creggers movie.

That being said, if that is not the case and this latest Resident Evil movie is a comedy horror, it might please the casual movie audience, but I fear it will cause a backlash from passionate fans of the Capcom series. I guess only time will tell.

Resident Evil will arrive in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
