New road safety camera technology is regularly tested and trialled in Victoria before it’s considered for use on our roads.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety conducts trials to assess whether new technology is safe, effective and accurate and determine its ability to integrate into the Road Safety Camera Program.

While cameras and other technology are being assessed during these trials, they do not issue any fines. However, Victoria Police continues to patrol areas where trials are occurring as part of normal road policing and enforcement duties. Police target dangerous and risky road user behaviours such as speeding, misuse of seatbelts and distracted driving (use of a portable device or mobile phone).

New and emerging technologies that may be trialled include:

    • emerging technology camera devices and systems
    • new software and hardware.

You may notice trials taking place on roads as new cameras are being tested. At other times, trials will not be visible because they are a software change.

TheVictorian Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030commits to halving road deaths by 2030 and eliminating deaths from our roads by 2050. To achieve this goal we need more people to drive safely. Unsafe driving is a factor in too many preventable deaths on our roads.

Road safety cameras are a proven tool. We use them to remind drivers to wear their seatbelts, not speed and not use portable devices or mobile phones while driving.

When a trial uses equipment that might be unfamiliar to drivers, we will publish information about it on this page so you can know what to expect.

From July 2026 through to September 2026, the Department of Justice and Community Safety will be triallingnew mobile road safety camera technologies in:

    • Bacchus Marsh
    • Bangholme
    • Bannockburn
    • Bayswater
    • Berwick
    • Caulfield South
    • Coldstream
    • Dandenong
    • Doncaster
    • Donvale
    • Geelong
    • Glenroy
    • Greenvale
    • Hughesdale
    • Huntingdale
    • Keilor Downs
    • Koo Wee Rup

    • Notting Hill
    • Ormond
    • Sunshine
    • Truganina
    • Wallace
    • Wallan
    • Wantirna
    • Winchelsea.

The trial aims to improve the existing mobile speed camera network by testing the effectiveness and accuracy of new technologies.

The technologies being trialled are similar to those currently used in themobile digital road safety camerasthat detect speeding offences anddistracted driver and seatbelt camerasthat detect seatbelt and portable device offences.

The technologies may be mounted to trailers or other infrastructure, such as moveable bases, poles and gantries. While they may look different to those systems currently operating in Victoria, they will only detect offences that are currently found in Victoria’s road rules.

During this trial, the new mobile road safety cameras being assessed will not issue fines. However, Victoria Police continues to patrol areas where trials are occurring as part of normal road policing and enforcement duties.
