Connecting HBCU excellence with the future of public radio

Public Radio Immersion Day, kicking off on October 2, 2026 is a new NPR initiative designed to introduce students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to the people, purpose, and possibilities of public radio.

Created in collaboration with Howard University, Bowie State University, and Morgan State University, Public Radio Immersion Day will bring journalism and communications students to NPR for a day of learning, dialogue, career exposure, and meaningful exchange. The experience is designed to help students better understand the many pathways into public radio and public media, while also giving NPR the opportunity to listen to and learn from the next generation of journalists, storytellers, creators, and media consumers.

Public media is evolving, and NPR’s future depends on building stronger relationships with emerging audiences. Public Radio Immersion Day is one way NPR is investing in that future.

What Public Radio Immersion Day is

Public Radio Immersion Day is an in-person experience that gives HBCU students direct exposure to NPR’s mission, content, platforms, leaders, and career pathways.

During the day, students will have opportunities to:

    • Learn about careers across public radio
    • Hear from NPR journalists, editors, producers, executives, and staff from across the organization
    • Explore how NPR creates journalism, audio, digital content, programming, and audience experiences
    • Share feedback on NPR content and platforms
    • Discuss how Gen Z students engage with news, storytelling, audio, video, and digital media
    • See how their skills, perspectives, and lived experiences can contribute to the future of public radio

The day is not only about introducing students to NPR. It is also about creating space for NPR to hear directly from students whose voices, ideas, and perspectives are essential to the future of public media.

Why NPR is building relationships with HBCUs

HBCUs have long been centers of excellence, leadership, innovation, culture, scholarship, and community impact. They have prepared generations of journalists, communicators, artists, public servants, and leaders whose work has shaped American life.

For NPR, collaborating with HBCUs is both a mission-aligned opportunity and a strategic investment in the future. As public media works to serve all Americans, it must continue to deepen its relationships with communities, students, and institutions that bring vital perspectives to journalism, storytelling, and public service.

Howard University, Bowie State University, and Morgan State University each bring a strong legacy of educating students who are prepared to lead, create, question, inform, and serve. Through Public Radio Immersion Day, NPR hopes to build a stronger bridge between these students and public radio.

This event reflects a shared belief: students should be able to see themselves in public media, and public media should be shaped by the voices and perspectives of the communities it seeks to serve.

    A mutually beneficial collaboration

Public Radio Immersion Day is designed to benefit both students and NPR.

For students, the day offers exposure to a wide range of career pathways that may not always be visible when people think about public radio. Public media careers include journalism, reporting, editing, podcasting, audio production, video, digital media, audience engagement, music, marketing, communications, product, technology, research, legal, development, operations, and leadership.

Students will have the opportunity to meet professionals across these areas, hear about their career journeys, ask questions, and better understand how their academic experiences and creative interests can connect to meaningful careers in media.

For NPR, the day creates an opportunity to listen to students as emerging audiences and future media leaders. Their perspectives can help NPR better understand how younger audiences encounter news and storytelling, what builds or weakens trust, what kinds of content feel relevant, and how public media can continue evolving to meet people where they are.

    Centering student voices

A core purpose of Public Radio Immersion Day is to center student voices.

Students will not only hear from NPR; they will also be invited to speak into NPR’s work. Their feedback, questions, and ideas will help NPR reflect on how its content, platforms, storytelling, and audience strategies are experienced by younger and more diverse audiences.

This exchange matters because public media cannot remain relevant by speaking only to the audiences it already knows well. It must also listen to the audiences it hopes to better serve.

    Why this work matters

Public Radio Immersion Day is rooted in NPR’s public-service mission. To serve the public fully, public media must continue to build trust, strengthen representation, expand access, and deepen relationships with communities across the country.

This work also recognizes that the future of journalism depends on the next generation. Students are already shaping how stories are created, shared, consumed, questioned, and trusted. Their perspectives are essential to understanding where media is going and how public media can remain meaningful in people’s daily lives.

    • Building awareness of public radio careers among HBCU students
    • Strengthening NPR’s understanding of emerging audiences
    • Creating a mutually beneficial relationship between NPR and HBCU journalism and communications programs

This initiative is an invitation to imagine what public radio can become when students are welcomed not only as visitors, but as collaborators, storytellers, and leaders.

“Public Radio Immersion Day is more than an in-person event; it is an opportunity for NPR to fully stand behind its mission to reflect and serve all of America. We have a responsibility to make space for the stories, perspectives, lived experiences and talent that these students bring. This initiative helps to ensure that the future of public radio has an HBCU fingerprint on it,” said Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Whitney M. Maddox.

    Looking ahead

Public Radio Immersion Day is intended to be more than a one-day event. It is the beginning of a deeper relationship between NPR and students and faculty at universities across the country.

Through this initiative, NPR hopes to continue learning from students, strengthening pathways into public radio, and creating opportunities that support the future of trusted journalism, storytelling, and public service.

As public radio continues to evolve, relationships like this help ensure that NPR remains connected to the communities, voices, and future leaders who will shape what comes next.

Any school or organization that would like to explore collaborating in Public Radio Immersion Day in the future should complete this form.
