Wham!’s 40-year-old hit “Last Christmas” continues to attract new fans and score new chart accolades, with the evergreen song recently reaching a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 12 rose to 3rd place.
The Billboard Pop Shop Podcast recently interviewed one half of British pop duo Wham! – Andrew Ridgeley – Talk all things “Last Christmas” and ask him what it was like to see the song reach new heights on the Hot 100.
“Well, very satisfied. You know, Yog [a nickname for Wham!’s other half, the late George Michael, who died in 2016]we take success in the United States very seriously. For any artist of that era…unless you were famous in America, you had nowhere to go. You might be a sensation in the UK, but in the US it’s really gold. We were lucky… one or two of our contemporaries were hugely successful in America.
“So, for this song to reach the chart position it’s at… George would be very happy, as I am. It means a lot to him.
The Pop Shop’s full interview with Ridgeley will premiere on December 23rd.
