Nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, originally scheduled for January 5, were announced on December 9. Golden Globe Awards organized in Los Angeles Times Expose the HFPA’s demographics and behavior.
While there is little overlap between Golden Globe voters and Oscar voters, the attention of the Globes can pique the interest of Oscar voters, so Golden Globe nominations are of interest to Oscar watchers.
Some of this year’s highlights include: Netflix’s top contenders, emilia perezWhat had previously had little traction now has some serious momentum. substance Looks stronger than expected. and Gladiator II Looks weaker.
Emilia Pellz resurrection
In a series of awards ceremonies in early December, the top film critic groups on the East and West coasts, the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle, as well as the Gotham Awards and the National Board of Review, were almost all snubbed. emilia perez. But Netflix’s Spanish-language musical came back to life on December 8, sweeping the European Film Awards and surpassing it the next day with 10 Golden Globe nominations Cabaret’sand Barbie’Nine has set a new all-time record in music/comedy.

The Golden Globes organization is not the HFPA
Strong performance by emilia perezas well as other major nominations for Sony Pictures Classics Brazil I am Still here (Fernanda Torres won Best Actress in a Drama Series) and Janus/Sideshow’s Indian Film Everything we imagine is light (Payal Kapadia won best director.) This follows last year’s Golden Globe nominations, in which three of the six drama nominees were non-English-language films.
The Golden Globes have always been voted on primarily by non-Americans. But until last year, nominations for the Globes were decided entirely by the HFPA, a group of fewer than 100 people in and around Los Angeles. The HFPA operates like a club, with members often banding together to promote Hollywood’s biggest stars (remember Angelina Jolie and tourists? ), which makes the ceremony more interesting for members and the telecast more likely to generate high ratings.
But since the HFPA was sold and its members were either disinvited or folded into the new Ballon d’Or organization, that coordination appears to have diminished significantly. Today, the Golden Globes’ membership includes 334 journalists from around the world, and nominations are decided not only by them but also by non-member film critics – many of whom are from the FIPRESCI International Federation of Film Critics and participate in many major film screenings. The Federation of Film Critics festivals around the world have different tastes than the old HFPA. One-third of directing nominees are women
The Golden Globes have multiple categories in various areas (separating dramas and musicals/comedies), but like every other major awards show, there’s only one category for directors. So it’s very noteworthy that they nominated two women in this category – Kapadia Everything we imagine is light and Coralie Fargeat for Mubi’s substance — ahead of several people widely seen as higher stakes, including Paramount’s Ridley Scott Gladiator IIWarner Bros.’ Denis Villeneuve. Dune: Part 2Jon M. Chu, Universal Pictures evil and Amazon/MGM’s LaMel Rose nickel boy.
Oddly, Kapadia’s film was not nominated for Best Picture (Drama), although Fajith’s film was also nominated for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) and she was nominated for Screenplay. No screenplay nominations were received. Everything we imagine is light Nominated for Best Non-English Language Film – it essentially swept the category at the Herald Awards.
