Political Thrillers of 2024 whip It’s a kind of Ocean’s 4 or more accurately, Ocean’s Anarchy. A small group of protagonists hunt down the current chief whip of a political party.
What is their purpose?
Bringing the entire rotten system to its knees. In other words, anarchy. Disrupting a system that breeds corruption and incompetence is like a flowerbed filled with invasive wild daisies.
hand waving whip
Director and co-writer Christopher Presswell co-created the work with Forgács W. András. The two writers had worked together before and it was an easy collaboration. Presenting a story that feels all too real and is, without a doubt, based in reality. The British government does have a history of persecuting those sections of the population that are most in need.
It doesn’t matter which party is “responsible”.
Presswell put his players through their paces with admirable proficiency. This isn’t too surprising as he is, several whiphe produced eight works. I look forward to seeing his next work.
story
Sadie is the full-time carer for her disabled sister Meg. Wallets are tight. The pair face some challenging times ahead as the ruling party decides to cut spending to “save a little money”.
Saadi decided to protest in his own way and recruited some friends to overthrow the government. They plan to steal the book of “dirty secrets” used by the Chief Whip to keep party members in line.
With a former minister and a brilliant hacker on the team, the heist is underway.
main actors
Shian Denovan plays Sadie Baxter. Full-time caregiver turned anarchist. She started rolling on this Ocean’s 4 plot.
Gala Wesson is Sadie’s partner and accomplice. Her job is to be the public face of their heists. Abi Munroe, wide-eyed and high-cheekbones, is dedicated to the cause.
Tom Knight plays frontbench MP Michael Harrington. A career politician who refused to toe the party line and was relegated to the backbench as a result. It’s this little black book that makes “return” possible.
Daniel Davis plays Jason Grant. He was a hacker who discovered and exploited vulnerabilities in government security systems.
Meg Fozard is Sadie’s sister Emily. A woman who faces many obstacles to her “normal” life. She was deemed “fit for work” and this began whip Embark on a heist journey.
Ray Bullock Jnr as Damian Wilson: Chief Whip. It’s a nasty piece of work that we don’t like at first sight.
Ocean’s 11 It’s not, but
so whip Maybe not Ocean’s Eleven, or even Ben Stiller’s version of the subtitled film Tower Heist, but it works.
marvelous.
For the movie I just started watching Feel It’s like a heist movie. The fast pace, clever editing and dialogue all feel like a British political version of a well-planned heist movie. All that’s missing is the Rat Pack from the original or Clooney and Pete from the remake.
Even Ben Stiller and his band of thieves.
However different it may be from the American original, its Britishness works to its advantage. *That being said; it helps to know how politics work across the pond. British Politics 101: Leaders are elected by political parties after they win. Think of the Republicans or Democrats telling the United States who the next president will be after they win an election.
One thing that helps sell this product is its real-life basis. The British government does make some silly claims, such as “turning ability back into disability”. This is a not-so-smart way to reduce welfare for those in need.
One of the points of contention
As shown in the photo above, the safe with the Chief Whip looks like it was never actually locked. The door will look loose every time someone touches it. The same thing happened to the “practice” safe that Sadie was trying to “crack.” *Obviously this was equally safe and the budget suffered, but the lack of belief that the loose door compromised the integrity of the prop.
honor
All the performers brought their “A” game to the movie. Knight is subtly convincing as a hard-working frontbencher. Denovan and Bullock are spot-on in their respective roles, with Wesson quietly playing the idealist.
Claire de Boer deserves extra praise as Dr. Jenkins. She knocked her character out of the proverbial park.
judgment
whip It gets a solid 5 out of 5 stars for its effort alone. *Sure, there’s a rickety door on the safe, but that doesn’t ruin a thing about the movie. * whip Just finished its limited release in the UK. The drama will be available “on demand” in the second half of October 2024. If you’re from the US, it’s both entertaining and educational.
This just goes to show why British cinema dominates cinematically almost effortlessly.
