Should you answer a “script needed” ad?

Type “screenwriter needed” or “script needed” into an internet search engine and you’ll find yourself inundated with ads like these:

The screenwriter wants to write an independent drama script. The fantastic and original treatment is already in place, it just requires you to turn it into a fully functional draft. There is no upfront fee, but we have several top producers interested in waiting to view the script.

    Or how about this?

Looking for a comedy script! Do you have a funny script in the style of the Farrelly Brothers? Then we want to read it! Send it to FunnyHaha Productions and if we like it, we’ll make it. No script was paid for, but professional actors and funding were secured.

    Our recommendation?

Avoid scripted wanted ads like this one

We find it amazing how people put out ads like this, basically requiring writers to spend a lot of time writing the script For no reason.

Once the product is not only made but potentially has some kind of success, there’s usually a commitment of cash. Don’t be fooled by statements like “The producer is waiting,” “We are a top production company,” or “You will be paid once completed.”

It’s just a ruse to try to get something from you for nothing. All your time and energy should be focused on Write the best script you can.

You should then focus on learning how to sell scripts and try to find a writing manager.

    in conclusion

The bottom line is this: never write a word for anyone without first get paid. There may be a few “script needed” ads that actually lead to paid work, but they are few and far between.

Overall, anyone who says they want you to write a screenplay for free should be avoided. No matter who they are. Your script may be needed, but don’t spend hours writing it and give it away. It’s worth much more than that.
