Zoe Wees considers music to be her home. Growing up, it was the rising pop singer’s safe haven from a world that often made her feel rejected due to her epilepsy. “For all of those who’ve had seizures before, they know how it feels not being able to talk,” she tells Apple Music in her Up Next film. “I would love to scream it all out, but I was too scared.” But a teacher in her hometown of Hamburg, Germany, Nils Bodenstedt, recognized her talent and helped cultivate an environment where Wees could become comfortable with her voice. They began down a path that would soon lead to the studio session where she came up with her breakout single, “Control.” Over the course of the film, Wees opens up about her upbringing and living with her illness and refusing to be defeated by it. On songs like “Control” and “Girls Like Us,” whatever pain she’s felt seems to be transformed into sheer beauty, as the emotionality in her vocal tone takes center stage. “Without the epilepsy, I wouldn’t be where I am right now,” she shares at one point. “It gave me so much hope, and it gave me strength, and I feel like that’s the reason why I’m here right now.” Watch the film and interview, and listen to Zoe Wees’ newest EP, Golden Wings, along with selections from the rest of the artists in the Up Next series. http://apple.co/-UpNextZoeWees
