The Drama International Short Film Festival has officially joined BAFTA’s list of qualifying festivals, creating a new potential awards pathway for British short filmmakers selected for its international programmes.
The Greek festival announced the recognition on 24 July 2026, ahead of its 49th edition, which will run in Drama from 6 to 12 September.
Under the new status, British short-film productions and co-productions selected for Drama’s international programmes may become eligible for BAFTA consideration, provided they also meet the British Academy’s other eligibility requirements.
The distinction is important: a film does not need to win an award at Drama solely because of this announcement, but selection at the festival is not an automatic BAFTA nomination either. The film and its filmmakers must still comply with the applicable BAFTA rules.
What the new status means for filmmakers
BAFTA qualifying festivals provide recognised screening routes that can help British shorts meet the entry requirements for the organisation’s short-film awards.
For British filmmakers, this gives Drama greater strategic value when planning a festival campaign. A selection can now contribute to both the film’s international visibility and its potential awards eligibility.
The opportunity applies specifically to qualifying British productions and co-productions appearing in Drama’s international programmes. It should not be interpreted as automatic BAFTA eligibility for every international film screened at the festival.
Filmmakers should consult the rules for the relevant BAFTA awards year to confirm requirements concerning British eligibility, production credits, festival screenings, release dates and submission deadlines.
They should also preserve official documentation confirming their selection and screening at Drama.
Drama adds BAFTA to its international credentials
The new recognition joins Drama’s existing relationships with the Academy Awards and the European Film Academy.
Drama is already an Oscar-qualifying festival through specific awards in its National and International competitions. The recipients of the International Competition Grand Prix and the National Competition’s Golden Dionysus can become eligible for Academy Award consideration, subject to Academy rules.
As a member of the European Film Academy Short Film Network, the festival can also put forward a film from its International Competition for consideration at the European Film Awards.
These are separate qualification systems. A film’s eligibility for the Oscars, BAFTAs or European Film Awards depends on the rules attached to each organisation.
What BAFTA looks for in a qualifying festival
According to Drama’s announcement, BAFTA evaluates festivals on more than the reputation of their programme.
Qualifying festivals are expected to demonstrate:
- A rigorous and fair selection process
- Reasonable and accessible submission fees
- Active support for British filmmakers
- A positive experience for participating filmmakers
- Professional programmes for the screen industries
- High-quality short-film programming and awards
- Strong screening facilities or technically reliable online platforms
- Diversity across the festival programme
- Continued organisational and staff development
Drama’s inclusion therefore represents recognition of both its programming and its wider support structure for filmmakers.
British cinema at DISFF49
The 2026 festival programme will include British films competing across Drama’s international sections.
The edition will also present a special programme developed in collaboration with the Glasgow Short Film Festival. Titled Which Way Home?, the programme connects with the wider thematic direction of DISFF49.
The collaboration gives audiences another opportunity to encounter British short filmmaking beyond the main competition selections.
The 2026 festival
The 49th Drama International Short Film Festival will take place from 6 to 12 September 2026.
Its programme features 157 films selected from 3,420 submissions, including 45 world premieres. The principal competitions cover national, national student, international, international student and international documentary films.
The International Documentary Competition is being introduced as a separate programme for the first time in 2026.
Competition films will also be made available free through the festival’s online platform, with access restricted to viewers in Greece.
Alongside screenings, the festival will offer industry and filmmaker activities including the Short Film Hub, Pitching Lab, professional discussions, workshops and networking opportunities.
A more valuable selection for British filmmakers
Drama has been presenting short films since 1978 and became an international festival in 1995.
Its addition to BAFTA’s qualifying list strengthens its position for British directors and producers deciding where to submit or premiere their work.
A Drama selection now carries another possible benefit beyond a festival screening: for qualifying British shorts and co-productions, it may contribute directly to a BAFTA campaign.
Filmmakers considering a future submission should nevertheless study both Drama’s festival regulations and BAFTA’s current short-film rules before building an awards strategy around the qualification.
