The Academy Museum presents its film series, public events, and education programs for August.
The Academy Museum is pleased to announce the extension of two exhibitions. Studio Ghibli’s PONYO will now remain on view through March 21, 2027, and Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho has been extended through October 24, 2027, giving visitors even more time to experience these immersive explorations of Studio Ghibli and Bong Joon Ho’s creative worlds.
August highlights include Inside Bong Joon Ho: Creature Effects with Andrew Roberts as part of the museum’s In Conversation series, An Evening with Charlize Theron Featuring Mad Max: Fury Road, Close-Up Tours: Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe (En Español), and Hollywoodland, Skate Hunnies Party on Wheels, and Directing Our Future: Teen Short Film Showcase.
Ongoing in August, the Academy Museum is screening The World of Studio Ghibli, Summer of Thrills, and Presented in VistaVision, an 11-day celebration to present ultra-rare VistaVision prints as well as 70mm remasters and new 6K digital scans.

Aug 20-31 | Created in 1954, VistaVision turned 35mm film on its side to produce a stunning high-resolution widescreen picture. The Academy Museum celebrates the format with an 11-day series of ultra-rare prints, 70mm remasters, and new 6K digital scans in the David Geffen Theater.
An Evening with Charlize Theron Featuring Mad Max: Fury Road
Aug 22 | Charlize Theron engages in conversation with members of the Academy Museum Teen Council before a special screening of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic world he created for Mad Max with this nonstop thrill ride that introduced a new Max (Tom Hardy) as well as action heroine (Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa).
Close-Up Tours: Marilyn Monroe
Now – Aug 30 | Museum educators lead 30-minute guided tours exploring the career of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. Through her films, costumes and more, this exhibition uncovers the woman behind the carefully crafted image.

Now – Aug 17 | A wide-reaching, international survey of the thriller. From silent-era serials and the Master of Suspense to ’60s indies, paranoid ’70s classics, the ’90s erotic thriller boom, and beyond, with filmmaker appearances throughout.
The World of Studio Ghibli
Now – Aug 28 | Programmed to accompany the exhibition Studio Ghibli’s PONYO, this series celebrates the traditional hand-drawn animation and imaginative storytelling of one of the world’s most recognizable animation studios.
Close-up Tours: Hollywoodland
Now – Aug 30 | Experience the galleries of Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital with museum educators. Each tour explores the topography of Los Angeles and highlights several of the Jewish founders of the Hollywood studio system.
Skate Hunnies Party on Wheels at the Academy Museum
Aug 6 – Sep 3 | The Academy Museum is rolling with Skate Hunnies to host a party on wheels, taking attendees around the Wilshire-Fairfax neighborhood, finishing with music and dance-skating on the Walt Disney Family Piazza.

Aug 8 | Journalist, author and disability advocate Kristen Lopez speaks with particular authority on how disability is represented—and too often misrepresented—in movies.
Directing Our Future: Teen Short Film Showcase
Aug 9 | The Academy Museum Tea Room hosts a screening of short films selected by the museum’s Teen Council, who challenged their peers to create a short film highlighting an aspect in their community they feel passionate about.
Academy Museum Free Day 2026
Aug 16 | The Academy Museum celebrates its fifth year with a day full of free, family-friendly fun, including museum admission, line dancing lessons, and a movie in the Ted Mann Theater. Summery snacks and beverages are available for purchase.

Aug 21 | Three-time Academy Award winner Ve Neill explores secrets behind Hollywood’s most memorable looks, highlighting the design characters from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), currently on display.
Drop-in Workshop for Teens: Stop-Motion Animation
Aug 21 | This month, teens explore stop-motion animation technique by creating their own stop-motion animation films, learning the importance of movement, design, and patience in bringing characters and worlds to life.
Inside Bong Joon Ho: Creature Effects with Andrew Roberts
Aug 22 | Visual effects supervisor and Academy Governor Andrew Roberts gives a 30-minute tour, revealing the ways visual effects can create or enhance on-screen creatures, featuring visual-effects creatures in Bong Joon Ho films: The Host (2006) and Mickey 17 (2025).
Ongoing Series
Ongoing series include Oscar Sundays, Family Matinees, Available Space, and Branch Selects. Films are shown in 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, or digital laser projection in the Ted Mann Theater (TMT) or David Geffen Theater (DGT). In some cases, films have been restored by the Academy Film Archive or another film partner. Select screenings include guest appearances, introductions, performances, and/or conversations.
