Amaal Mallik disclosed that Arijit Singh had begun to lose his passion for film music one to two years prior to his announcement about stepping back from playback singing.

Earlier this year, renowned playback singer Arjit Singh announced his decision to step away from playback singing, a move that left many fans emotional. Having been a beloved voice in Hindi film music for over a decade, his announcement felt like the end of an era for numerous listeners. Music composer Amal Malik, who has collaborated extensively with Singh, believes that this decision was not sudden. He noted that those close to the singer had observed a growing disinterest in film music from Singh one or two years prior to his public announcement.

Amal emphasized that Singh’s choice was entirely his own, stating, “I don’t think anyone forced him in any way. He made this decision himself.” He further elaborated on the evolving landscape of the Hindi film music industry, where a popular singer’s name can often serve as a commercial asset. Amal remarked, “Even in film music, once you become a big artist, you have the freedom to choose your projects.” He pointed out that while having Singh sing on a track can enhance its chances of success, the quality of the song itself remains paramount. “A singer’s popularity cannot replace the quality of a song,” he asserted, highlighting that a song’s appeal relies on the collaboration between the singer, composer, and lyricist.

Amal also acknowledged Singh’s right to be selective after an illustrious career, stating, “After singing around 700 songs in multiple languages, any artist gets tired.” He described Singh as a once-in-a-generation talent, noting that not everyone possesses his unique abilities or the courage to step back at the peak of their career. Despite speculation surrounding Singh’s collaboration with Amal on the upcoming project “Avarapun 2,” Amal does not view it as a definitive return to playback singing. He remarked, “People will say all sorts of things,” suggesting that if Singh finds inspiration in future songs, he may choose to return.

Amal urged fans to understand Singh’s decision in a different light, clarifying, “People are treating this as if he’s no longer with us. This isn’t an obituary. Arjit Singh has stepped away from film music, not from music itself.” This perspective indicates that Singh’s choice may not signify a complete farewell but rather a desire to engage with music that resonates with him. While fans may experience a decrease in his presence in films, Amal’s comments suggest that Singh could still return to playback singing when inspired by the right material.
