Superstar Dilip Kumar’s legacy as Indian cinema’s quintessential tragedy king has endured for generations, despite a relatively selective filmography of just over 50 movies.
His understated acting, expressive silences and remarkable ability to communicate complex emotions through the smallest gestures influenced countless performers, including Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.
Dilip Kumar’s Painful Moment During His Final Film
However, filmmaker Umesh Mehra witnessed a rather bittersweet side of that legacy while directing Dilip Kumar in Qila, which became the veteran actor’s final released film. Speaking to DD Urdu, Mehra recalled that Dilip Kumar had remained away from the screen for nearly two decades, and by the time he returned, younger audiences were no longer familiar with the legend.
“When I worked with him, he hadn’t done a film for, I think, 15, 17, or 18 years. (But Dilip Kumar had done Saudagar in 1991) He hadn’t forgotten how to act, but people had forgotten him. Those of us in the industry remembered who Dilip Kumar was, but the public had forgotten.”
Mehra’s most painful memory came during a screening of Qila. While observing audience reactions during the interval, he overheard a young boy making an unexpected remark about Dilip Kumar.
“There was one very miserable incident that I witnessed, where young boys simply didn’t know who he was. It feels very sad. There was this one comment from a child that still rings in my ears. It was during the interval. We would listen in to the reactions from the audience. And as this child was walking out, he said to his father, ‘Papa, he’s copying Shah Rukh Khan.’”
The comment carried a striking irony, considering how deeply Shah Rukh Khan himself admired Dilip Kumar. SRK shared a close relationship with Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu, who affectionately regarded the younger actor as their “child”.
Shah Rukh has often spoken about the influence Dilip Kumar had on him. At the Zee Cine Awards in 2001, he humorously recalled his first meeting with the legendary actor.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I am blessed because when I came to Bombay and met Dilip Sahab for the first time, he lightly tapped me on my cheek and said, ‘Work hard!’ Let me tell you, when a man from Peshawar gives even a light tap, it feels like a huge slap.”
He continued, “But I don’t mind, because that one small slap pushed my acting career forward for a decade. Now, I believe if I want my career to move ahead again, I will request Dilip Sahab for another tight slap, maybe it will keep me relevant for another two decades.”
Dilip Kumar died at the age of 98 on July 7, 2021, leaving behind an acting legacy that continues to influence Indian cinema.
