    Article too long to read?

Narrative, documentary and animated shorts of up to 40 minutes can enter the 2027 <a href="https://sxsw.com/festivals/film-awards/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>SXSW Film & TV Festival, with submission fees starting at $55 before the first deadline.

Short filmmakers planning their 2027 festival runs still have time to submit to the SXSW Film & TV Festival, with the first submission deadline set for 25 August 2026.

SXSW opened Film & TV Festival submissions on 28 July 2026, and the submission window remains open through 1 October 2026. The 2027 festival will take place in Austin, Texas, from 15–21 March 2027.

For short filmmakers, SXSW is particularly notable because its Narrative, Documentary and Animated Short Film Grand Jury Award winners become eligible for consideration for the Academy Awards. SXSW also has qualifying connections to the BAFTA Film Awards for eligible British short films.

Which short films can enter SXSW 2027?

SXSW accepts shorts in three principal categories:

    • Narrative Short
    • Documentary Short
    • Animated Short

A short film must have a running time of 40 minutes or less, including credits. SXSW follows the Academy’s runtime definition for short films.

Projects eligible for SXSW 2027 must have been completed in 2025 or 2026, or be on track for completion in early 2027.

SXSW 2027 short-film deadlines and fees

Short-film submission fees increase across the three remaining deadlines:

    First deadline — 25 August 2026: $55
    Second deadline — 15 September 2026: $70
    Final deadline — 1 October 2026: $90

SXSW’s official deadline page lists the deadlines as ending at 11:59pm, while its submission application specifies the deadline time as 11:59pm Pacific Time.

For filmmakers whose projects are already ready, submitting before 25 August therefore saves $35 compared with waiting until the final deadline.

Premiere status matters — but it is not an absolute barrier

Unlike festivals that impose a blanket premiere requirement on all shorts, SXSW says premiere status is an important factor in programming decisions rather than an absolute eligibility condition.

The festival states that it may still consider a short that has previously screened if programmers strongly connect with the film and it has not already received extensive exposure.

That distinction could make SXSW relevant to filmmakers whose shorts have already begun their festival runs.

However, filmmakers seeking the strongest possible premiere status should pay close attention to SXSW’s definitions. A World Premiere, for example, must not previously have screened theatrically, aired on television, been made publicly available online or been released through home-video or public distribution platforms.

Submit the version you want programmers to judge

SXSW requires filmmakers to provide a working online viewing link when submitting.

The festival specifically advises entrants to submit their film in its most complete form possible, because programmers will not re-watch a newer version after the application has been submitted.

Work-in-progress cuts can be accepted, but SXSW says trailers and rough assemblies are not suitable submissions. The viewing link must remain active through March 2027.

Applicants are scheduled to receive their selection status by 9 February 2027. Films invited to the festival will need to be available for screening on DCP.

An Oscar-qualifying opportunity for short filmmakers

SXSW is one of the festivals where winning the relevant short-film competition can provide an Academy Awards qualification route.

The Grand Jury winners in the Narrative, Documentary and Animated Short Film categories become eligible for Academy Awards consideration, subject to meeting the Academy’s other applicable rules.

Selection at SXSW itself should therefore not be confused with automatic Oscar qualification: the relevant qualifying award must be won.

With the first deadline approaching on 25 August, filmmakers with completed shorts have an incentive to submit sooner rather than simply waiting for October. Those whose projects need more finishing time still have the September and October windows available, albeit at higher fees.

Filmmakers preparing their entries can also use our guide on how to submit your short film to festivals before finalising their SXSW application.

Before entering, filmmakers should review their project’s completion date, premiere history and current cut carefully — particularly because SXSW says the originally submitted version is the one its programmers are guaranteed to review.
