Directing a movie isn’t an easy task. You have to have a vision for the story you want to tell and be able to execute it in a way that resonates with audiences. Success isn’t easy to come by, either, especially when you’re just starting out as a director, or if you’re a well-known artist who makes a film that just doesn’t resonate with moviegoers.
The highest-grossing directors are those who can direct amazing hit after amazing hit and continue to bring fans to the movies with each new release. Here are the top money-making directors today, based on data compiled by Statista in January 2026.
Steven Spielberg: $10.7 billion
Steven Spielberg has become a household name across his decades of directing experience and 37 films, which have earned him a whopping $10.7 billion at the box office. He has had successful standalone films like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Saving Private Ryan, and Schindler’s List, which won him an Oscar for Best Director in 1994. But his franchise movies have brought in big bucks as well. His highest-grossing film of all time was 1993’s Jurassic Park, and in 1997 he returned for a sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park,which also fetched a pretty penny.
James Cameron: $9.8 billion
James Cameron also enjoyed enormous box office success with franchise films from the Terminator and Alien franchises as well as the Avatar movies. He comes in second place behind Spielberg, possibly because Spielberg has directed more films, but the films Cameron has directed have made big bucks. Three of the five highest-grossing films of all time—Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic—were directed by Cameron.
The Russo Brothers: $6.8 billion
The third-highest-grossing director is actually a pair of brothers who have made a name for themselves with comic-book superhero movies that ended up on the big screen. Anthony and Joe Russo are best known for their Marvel franchise movies, including Captain America and Avengers films. Avengers: Endgame is the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, and its prequel, Avengers: Infinity War, also makes the top 10 list.
Peter Jackson: $6.6 billion
Peter Jackson has directed films like King Kongand documentaries about The Beatles, but it’s his work in Middle-earth that has made him the most money. Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, released in 2001, 2002, and 2003, made him the most cash at the box office, followed by additional films covering the series’ prequel, The Hobbit. In 2004, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the final installment in the series, earned Jacksonthree Oscarsfor Best Picture, Best Writing, and Best Director. It was also his highest-grossing movie.
Michael Bay: $6.5 billion
Michael Bay has a reputation for directing action flicks that turn into summer box-office cash. His directing credits include blockbusters like Pearl Harbor, Armageddon, and Bad Boys. But his best commercial successes have come from the Transformers franchise, which includes movies like Transformersand Transformers: Age of Extinction. His 2011 hit Transformers: Dark of the Moon is his highest-grossing film.
David Yates: $6.4 billion
David Yates has directed more than 20 films, with his forays into the Harry Potterfranchise making the most at the box office. He directed the last four films of the Harry Potter series, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,and the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He also added three Harry Potter-adjacent films to his box-office haul with the Fantastic Beasts movie series.
Christopher Nolan: $6.1 billion
Christopher Nolan has a reputation for his unique approach to directing, and his body of work includes mind-bending films likeInception and Memento as well as sweeping historical dramas like Oppenheimerand Dunkirk. His highest-grossing film, The Dark Knight Rises, is part of his gritty Batman trilogy. But this list doesn’t include his 2026 summer hit The Odyssey, which could give him an additional box-office boost.
Ridley Scott: $5.0 billion

Ridley Scotthas directed more than 50 films over his career, spanning decades with films like Blade Runner,Thelma & Louise, and The Martian, which is his top-grossing film. He’s also been involved with the Alien franchise and directed both Gladiator andGladiator II, building on success with multiple movies that take place in the same world.
Tim Burton: $4.9 billion
Tim Burton’s quirky point of view comes through in his movies like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Ed Woodas well as his work on two Batman films in the 1990s. That unique directing style also shaped his take on Alice in Wonderland, which earned more cash than any of his other turns as a director.
J.J. Abrams: $4.6 billion
J.J. Abrams hasn’t directed many films, but the ones he has directed have gone on to become blockbusters and have earned him a spot on the list of the top 10 highest-grossing directors of all time. It helps that Abrams has directed films in successful movie franchises such as Star Wars, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible. In fact, his highest-grossing film as a director came from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
