Disney, BBC Studios and Ludo Studio have unveiled the first look at The Bluey Movie, giving fans their first glimpse at the feature length adaptation of the hugely popular Australian animated series. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas worldwide on August 6, 2027, marking the first time Bluey and her family will headline a theatrical feature.

The first footage introduces a noticeable visual change for the franchise. While the television series is known for its distinctive 2D animated appearance, The Bluey Movie is being created as a CG animated feature. The footage shows Bluey and her younger sister Bingo playing “Keepy Uppy” with a balloon, offering an early indication of how the familiar characters will translate to a larger cinematic format.

The move to a feature film represents a significant step for Bluey, which first premiered in 2018 and has since become one of the most successful children’s television properties internationally. The series follows Bluey, a blue heeler puppy, alongside her sister Bingo and their parents Chilli and Bandit. Its stories are built around imaginative games and everyday family experiences, helping the programme develop a substantial audience among children and adults alike.

Joe Brumm, the creator of Bluey, is writing and directing the film. Richard Jeffery, who worked on the first three seasons of the television series, is co-directing, while Amber Naismith is producing. Brumm is also serving as an executive producer alongside Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson of Ludo Studio and Justine Flynn of BBC Studios. Joff Bush, the composer behind the series, is providing the music for the film.

The original voice cast will also have an important role in the transition from television to cinema. Melanie Zanetti is returning as Chilli, Bluey and Bingo’s mother, while David McCormack is returning as Bandit, their father. Their involvement helps maintain continuity with the series as the characters move into a feature length story.

The film’s release date was announced in September 2025, when Disney, BBC Studios and Ludo Studio confirmed that The Bluey Movie would receive a worldwide theatrical release on August 6, 2027. Disney will handle theatrical distribution, with the film expected to become available on Disney+ after its cinema run. In Australia, it will also be available through ABC iview and ABC Kids following its theatrical release.

The theatrical project arrives as Bluey continues to demonstrate extraordinary streaming popularity. Disney has described the series as its most watched programme worldwide on Disney+ in 2024, while Nielsen data cited by Disney recorded more than 50.5 billion minutes watched in the United States between January 1 and November 24, 2024. The series has also collected major awards, including a Peabody Award and an International Emmy Kids Award.

The first look therefore establishes a clear cinematic direction while keeping the central family intact. Bluey, Bingo, Chilli and Bandit remain at the heart of the story, with the new CG animation providing the biggest visible change as the franchise prepares for its first theatrical adventure.

With the August 6, 2027 release date already locked in, anticipation is likely to grow as Disney, BBC Studios and Ludo Studio reveal further details about the story, characters and music.
