Best-selling crime author AA Dhand will lend his expertise to a new initiative to discover the next generation of screenwriters in Bradford.

The creator of the Harry Virdee series of detective novels, which are set in the city, is taking part in the Write Across Bradford programme.

Up to twelve emerging writers will be chosen to take part in workshops, masterclasses and networking events over the summer.

The aim of the initiative, led by BBC Writers, is to teach participants how to become screenwriters and create ideas for a new TV series.

Dhand was creator, writer and executive producer of Virdee, a six-part crime series, based on his books.

It was launched on BBC One in February 2025 after a premiere in the writer’s home city and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Jessica Loveland, head of New Writing, BBC Writers & Drama Commissioning, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with AA Dhand as ambassador for the programme.

“Not only is he an acclaimed writer, but he has consistently championed Bradford’s creative community.

“His work is deeply rooted in place, voice and identity, exactly the values at the heart of Write Across Bradford.

“And he brings a generosity and enthusiasm that make him an inspiring figure for emerging writers.”

BBC Writers is leading the eight-week programme in collaboration with five partner organisations: Word Up North, Bradford Producing Hub, New Writing North, Bradford Arts Centre and Screen Yorkshire.

Loveland said the scheme was about creating space for “new voices” and to tell stories “rooted in place”.

She said: “At BBC Writers, we’re committed to supporting emerging talent across the UK.

“This programme is a brilliant opportunity for us to connect with the new writing community in the Bradford District and help writers gain meaningful industry insight and hands-on development.”

Write Across Bradford is designed to support emerging writers and creatives who are at the early stages of their writing careers.

They should be over the age of 18 and currently live full-time in the Bradford District.

Applications are encouraged from individuals who have been historically under-represented in the screen industries.

Details are on the BBC website and the deadline is 10 March at 12:00 GMT.

The scheme is free and will run from July to September.
