Formula E has signed a multi-year partnership with Sennheiser, which will serve as the championship’s Official Sound Provider.

Under the agreement, Sennheiser’s products and AMBEO immersive audio technology will be used across Formula E’s broadcast and trackside operations to capture the sound of electric racing for viewers and spectators.

The deal puts audio production at the centre of Formula E’s presentation as the all-electric series seeks new ways to distinguish its coverage and live experience. It will span the global championship and extend beyond television to fan zones and VIP hospitality areas at race venues.

Sennheiser’s role will focus on audio capture, processing and reproduction workflows. The work will examine how sound from the cars, teams and circuit environment can be recorded and delivered in a more immersive format across devices.

The tie-up also reflects a broader effort by sports rights holders to improve both at-home viewing and the atmosphere for fans attending in person. For Formula E, whose cars have a markedly different acoustic profile from combustion-engine racing, the challenge has been to present electric motorsport as distinct rather than diminished.

Dan Cherowbrier, Chief Technology Officer at Formula E, said the partnership was intended to reshape how the series approaches audio.

“Innovation and technology are at the core of Formula E, and Sennheiser is the perfect partner to help us redefine the audio landscape of our championship. Their professional audio technologies and workflows, particularly the AMBEO immersive ecosystem, provide a uniquely dynamic setting to explore the future of sound in racing. This collaboration is a vital proof point in how we connect real-world audio innovation with practical application, bringing fans closer to the action through natural, three-dimensional sound,” Cherowbrier said.

Formula E has long positioned itself as a testing ground for electric vehicle technology and urban motorsport formats. It said the new audio setup would be introduced during what it described as the GEN4 Evo era, linking the partnership to the next stage of the series’ technical development.

AMBEO, Sennheiser’s immersive audio platform, will be central to the collaboration. The system is designed to capture and reproduce three-dimensional sound, which could give broadcasts a more detailed sense of movement and position around the track.

That matters in a racing series where the noise signature is not dominated by engine roar. Instead, the soundscape includes the rising pitch of electric powertrains, tyre noise, contact with kerbs, radio communications and the wider track environment. Formula E and Sennheiser aim to turn those characteristics into part of the sport’s identity.

Andreas Sennheiser said the partnership would give the company a practical setting in which to apply its audio technology.

“Formula E represents exactly the kind of environment where meaningful innovation happens. At Sennheiser, we are driven by the ambition to bring advanced audio technologies into real-world applications, and this collaboration gives us an exciting opportunity to rethink the role sound can play in electric racing. Great visuals deserve equally compelling sound, and we see real potential to define the sport’s unique acoustic character through dynamic in-car and trackside soundscapes. Ultimately, this partnership is about learning, exploring and helping to shape the future of how live sport is experienced,” Andreas Sennheiser, Chief Executive Officer of Sennheiser Group, said.

For Sennheiser, the agreement adds a global sports property to its professional audio business, which includes microphones, monitoring systems, meeting products and streaming technology. The company has operated in audio for more than 80 years and is using the Formula E project as a showcase for its work in live production environments.

The partnership will not be confined to the broadcast feed. Trackside operations, fan zones and hospitality areas are also set to incorporate Sennheiser equipment and audio systems, suggesting a broader overhaul of how sound is managed across race weekends.

Kai Detlefsen outlined how the audio platform would be applied within the championship.

“AMBEO enables the capture, processing and reproduction of natural, three-dimensional sound, supporting more immersive and emotionally engaging listening experiences. Within Formula E, AMBEO solutions will allow viewers at home to feel more closely connected to the dynamic racing environment and to their favourite teams,” Kai Detlefsen, Manager, AMBEO at Sennheiser, said.

Formula E has reached 150 races and includes manufacturers such as Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis, Mahindra and Lola Cars on its grid. The series said the new arrangement would feed into both its media output and the experience around the circuit, with Sennheiser’s technology embedded in the championship’s day-to-day production setup.
