With the looming merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, secrets are beginning to spill out about some of the projects that could be impacted by the corporate shake-up. Now for the rub: with the merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. speeding ahead, this Game of Thronesmovie script is one of many projects that’s facing an uncomfortable sort of limbo. The studios may want to hold off on greenlighting it until after things are finalized, and it becomes clear what sort of resources and autonomy WB will have under its new overlord. Or they may scrap it altogether, in favor of a new slate of content under the finalized mega-brand. No one knows quite how it’s all going to shake out yet, so it sounds like the movie’s future is uncertain.

“Rival versions” of Aegon the Conqueror’s story are being developed
The other thing that makes this story so interesting is that it’s the first time we’re hearing anything about Beau Willimon writing in the Game of Thronesuniverse. It’s no secret that HBO has a number of Thronesspinoffs in development, and we’ve known for quite a while now that Aegon’s Conquest was one of them. If anything, the Aegon the Conqueror spinoff is one of the more visible of the lot, thanks to the occasional update from the writer working on the treatment for it, Mattson Tomlin (The Batman II, Terminator Zero).
In July 2025, Tomlin confirmed on X that he had done “lots” of writing on scripts for the Aegon’s Conquest television series, and that George R.R. Martin is involved in its development. After that, the latest time he teased the series was with a cryptic Hodor gif in response to a fan asking for an update in January 2026.
The Hollywood Reporterhas a bit more information, confirming from their ownveloping “rival versions of the story of King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.” According to THR, the movie — which we now know Willimon penned — is being billed as a “mammoth, Dune-sized feature film.”
So Tomlin is penning the series for HBO, and Willimon wrote the film for Warner Bros. That’s certainly an interesting approach, and I’m very curious how it’s played out internally. But I’m even more curious which, if any, of these treatments will see the light of day.
For now we wait for more news, and keep our ear to the ground. However things go, it’s clear there’s a strong appetite at the studios for Aegon the Conqueror to make his on-screen debut in one form or another.
