L-mount has never had a truly tiny lens. Viltrox has now fixed that: the AF 28mm F4.5 “Chip” has arrived for L-mount at $99, weighing 60g and thin enough to be mistaken for a body cap. Details are on the official Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 L page.

    Why this matters for L-mount

The Chip has been a cult favourite on Sony E and Fujifilm X since 2024, and its arrival on L-mount is more significant than a $99 lens usually would be. It is only Viltrox’s second autofocus lens for the system since joining the L-Mount Alliance in September 2025, and third-party support has been the mount’s persistent weakness compared with Sony E.

The pairing that makes most sense is with the new generation of compact full-frame bodies — the Panasonic Lumix S9, Sigma BF and Leica SL3 all emphasise portability, and all have been slightly undermined by the fact that full-frame lenses are rarely small. Put a 60g pancake on an S9 and you have something that genuinely fits in a coat pocket.

    What you get for $99

More than you might expect. The optical design runs 6 elements in 6 groups with two extra-low dispersion and two aspherical elements, with HD nano multi-layer coating to control flare and a water-resistant, anti-fouling coating on the front element.

Autofocus is driven by a VCM motor, and crucially the lens supports L-mount electronic communication properly — autofocus, Eye AF, face detection, EXIF transmission and camera-side controls all work. That is not a given on budget third-party glass, and it is what separates a usable everyday lens from a novelty.

There is a genuinely charming design touch too: a sliding cover that doubles as the lens cap, so the lens protects itself when not in use.

    The compromises are real

At this price and size, something has to give, and Viltrox is unusually candid about what does.

The lens uses a unit focus design rather than internal or floating focus, meaning the whole optical group moves together and the lens physically extends when focusing on close subjects. That also produces pronounced focus breathing when shifting between near and far focus — which matters a great deal if you shoot video and rather less if you shoot stills.

Construction is lightweight plastic with a metal mount, and f/4.5 is slow. This is a lens for daylight and considered shooting, not for dim interiors or shallow depth of field.

None of which really counts against it. At $99 the Chip is not competing with a 35mm f/1.4 — it is competing with leaving the camera at home. On that basis it makes an easy case, and L-mount owners have waited long enough for something this small.
