A photo shoot, especially one with three subjects, requires a little bit of magic.
OK, a whole lot of magic.
You can most likely empathize with the impossible task of aligning multiple people’s schedules. For us, that was our three subjects, two photographers, art director, editor in chief, and summer intern. Oh, and of course our venue, IPIC Delray Beach, had to be available, too. This is where magic, prayers, burning sage, and whatever the hell else you have in your arsenal is required. A frenzy of texting and emailing—when are you in town? Can you make this time? What is your hard stop? How long will it take you to get here after summer camp drop off?
The IPIC Delray Beach was an easy choice for our photo shoot because it offered so many visual moments. A life-sized collage by Peter Tunney covers the front entrance, a man’s face carved into the concrete by Portuguese artist Vhills, and kids painted by Ernest Zacharevic playing on pods of living walls. Even the black-and-white herringbone tile framing the main bar of the theater was a moment worth capturing (and it was, enough so to make our cover).
Our team arrived at the theatre at 8 a.m., on the docket a plan to photograph the three men profiled by editor Christiana Lilly, then to be photographed in groups. With each person requiring at least 45 minutes for individual shoots, and just as long for the group (and taking into consideration different locations). All before customers started arriving to watch movies.
Our super models filed in, donning cobalt blue and maroon suits, while also armed with ties, pocket squares, and back up shirts. In a oh so Boca moment, Jay Brandt, J.P. Hervis, and James Taylor became fast friends, sharing a love of sports, entrepreneurship, and giving back. The shoot may have included a few rounds of play on the escalators. From start to finish, we knocked out the shoot within about three-and-a-half hours, just in time for the theater to open its doors to patrons.
Once again, magic, as there was never a sign that we were ever there—until the magazine came out, of course.
