Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday urged students to steer clear of excessive social media use and misinformation, asking them to remain focused on studies, build skills and concentrate on shaping their careers.
Interacting with students at a teacher’s day celebration at Secondary Board High School in Cuttack, Majhi said their primary responsibility was to study well, acquire skills and contribute to their own development as well as that of the country.
“Students should stay away from activities that could come in the way of building their careers,” he said, stressing that education was aimed not merely at imparting knowledge but at shaping individuals.
Highlighting the teacher-student relationship, Majhi said it needed to become more friendly in the present era. He also urged students to seek the blessings of their parents and elders and strive for success.
Paying tribute to former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary, Majhi said the guru-shishya tradition was an unparalleled feature of Indian culture. From Lord Rama and Lord Krishna to Chandragupta Maurya and Swami Vivekananda, teachers had played a decisive role in shaping great personalities, he said.
Referring to the government’s education initiatives, Majhi said Odisha had become the first State to make education universally free from Shishu Vatika to the postgraduate level under the “KG to PG” free education scheme.
He said 2,200 world-class Godabarish Mishra Adarsha Primary Schools were being constructed at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore, while 45,000 Shishu Vatika centres had been opened for pre-school children. The government would also provide mid-day meals and textbooks to Class IX and X students, financial assistance to tribal students under the Shaheed Madho Singh Haath Kharcha Yojana and fill 45,000 teacher posts over the next three years, he said.
Majhi also highlighted the Panchasakha Shiksha Setu initiative for involving alumni in school transformation and called for collective efforts by teachers, students, alumni and the public to build a strong and self-reliant Odisha.
He felicitated five teachers for their dedicated service on the occasion.
