In the wake of this Halloween season’s “Carrie” for Prime Video, Mike Flanagan will continue hanging around in the world ofStephen King with a new movie adaptation ofThe Mist.

Speaking with Collider, Flanagan provides an update on that project.

“I’m writing it right now,” Flanagan tells the outlet. “I was working on it on the airplane here.”

Flanagan also notes that he’s turning the screenplay in around Halloween.

What does Mike Flanagan plan on bringing to the table with his own version of The Mist? In a <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/mikeflanagan<a href="https://cinemamix360.com/2026/09/17/meta-at-the-cannes-film-festival-2026/” title=”Meta at The Cannes Film Festival 2026″>film.com” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>series of posts on BlueSky, he promised that his adaptation will very much be its own thing.

Flanagan promised to a fan, “The Mist is going to be great. If there wasn’t an excellent answer to why, I wouldn’t do it.” He continued in a follow-up post, “I love Darabont’s film, and there’s zero point in remaking it. Which is why I’m going in a different direction.”

He doubled down, “This isn’t a retread. The differences start page 1.”

“And FWIW, I got the same ‘but why’ comments for Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, House of Usher, Carrie, The Exorcist, even Ouija: Origin of Evil,” Flanagan noted. “Also got it for Life of Chuck. I’ve been lucky so far in my career to only take on projects I’m really excited about.”

Flanagan will be writing and directing the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s novella, which was first published as part of the 1980 anthology Dark Forces before being included in King’s 1985 collection Skeleton Crew – also home to The Raft, Survivor Type, and The Monkey.

The story is set in a Maine town that is consumed by a mysterious fog from which creatures emerge to attack. A group of survivors hole up in a local grocery store, sparking mob mentality and empowering unhinged extremists who become as dangerous as the horrors outside.

Stephen King’s The Mist has of course already made its way onto the big screen with Frank Darabont’s acclaimed feature film adaptation as well as the small screen with a short-lived series.
