Netflix content chief says the company is in touch with FIFA
Netflix has grown significantly beyond its television and film model. For example, the streaming platform is eyeing the U.S. streaming rights for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2030 and 2034.
According to Deadline, the federation is in the early stages of looking for broadcasters for its upcoming tournaments.
In this regard, Bela Bajaria, the streamer’s content chief, said, “We have a great relationship with [FIFA] because we have the Women’s World Cup and [we’re] having those conversations.”
This refers to owning the North American rights to the Women’s World Cup of 2027 and 2031.
“We’re always going to be in the conversation with the leagues,” the exec said at the FT’s Business of Entertainment conference.
She added, “I’m really excited about the Women’s World Cup. So, we’re definitely going to always have those conversations.”
Bajaria, though being from the UK, called this year’s World Cup “exciting” despite Argentina thrashing her home country in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Netflix renewed The Beast in Me for season two despite the series being marketed as a limited series.
Howard Gordon, as a showrunner, said, “We always told ourselves we’d only do a second season of ‘The Beast in Me’ if we found a story that was worthy of the first – and I’m thrilled to say we found it.”
“We loved making this show, and our audience seemed to love watching it, so we’re enormously grateful to Jinny Howe and Netflix, and to Karey Burke and 20th Television for giving us the chance to get the band back together and do it again,” he concluded.
