Ben <a href="https://cinemamix360.com/2026/10/14/ben-affleck-recalls-low-point-of-career-while-shooting-justice-league/” title=”Ben Affleck recalls “low point of career” while shooting ‘Justice League’”>Affleck has been back in the director’s chair lately, so let’s take a look at his six efforts in that area of filmmaking and decide on the best.
To a generation, Ben Affleck is the best Batman to ever grace the big screen, undeniably. To others, he is the Oscar-winning co-writer of Good Will Hunting, the film that helped make his and Matt Damon’s careers. Or, to others, he is the unfortunate star of Gigli. Eclectic doesn’t quite do justice to his career.
But, to many, he has become one of Hollywood’s best young directors, with films such as Argo and Gone Baby Gone winning countless awards and being regarded as two of the best films of the new century. With his new film, Animals, now streaming on Netflix, we rank Affleck’s directorial outings thus far to find out which we consider his very best.

So far, the reviews for Affleck’s latest film, now streaming on Netflix, have been among the least favourable of his career.
Animals is based on an original screenplay co- Billy Ray, and Connor O. McIntyre. Production was initially scheduled to begin in 2024, but Affleck reportedly had second thoughts about moving forward with it. This change left original star Matt Damon unavailable when filming began, leading Affleck to take over the lead role. Kerry Washington also joined the cast after Jennifer Garner dropped out
In the film, Affleck portrays a Los Angeles mayoral candidate who discovers that his son has been kidnapped. This shocking event throws his carefully planned life and campaign into turmoil, prompting him to uncover hidden truths about himself and his wife (played by Washington). The politically charged narrative explores themes of ambition, morality, and the contrast between public and private personas, as well as the power dynamics that accompany political positions. Gillian Anderson delivers a standout performance as the “fixer” Dayle, while Robert Elswit’s superb cinematography is another area worth some bonus points.

Easily Affleck’s most ambitious film of his directing career thus far – although the abandoned Batman solo film he was going to direct and star in would have eclipsed it had it come off – Live by Night is a disappointing effort with the cast (Sienna Miller, Elle Fanning, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper) and budget involved (Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the film’s producers), but a respectable big swing to do something slightly out of the box in its attempt to adapt Dennis Lehane’s acclaimed novel.
Affleck leads the film as Joe Coughlin, a Boston-based gangster who rises to power during the Prohibition era in the 1920s and 1930s. He heads to Florida to form his own operation; he cannot escape his past, and the brutal realities of that are soon on his doorstep again. An American Dream film on the ambitions of wealth and power, the film explores loyalty, revenge, redemption and reconciliation, as well as the consequences of violence.

It was a bit of a surprise to see Affleck direct Air, given the darker, edgier films he had made up to this point, but any director will always want to stretch themselves, just as they do in the acting world. Based on the true story, Airtells of how talent scout Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) persuaded Nike to sign up a minor basketball player by the name of Michael Jordan, and whose eventual deal would be quite unprecedented.
More than just another sports film, Air examines not just basketball, and Jordan and Vaccaro’s story, but how one business decision changed both sport in general and how deals between athletes and corporations would change forever. Indeed, it is also about the power of belief, taking risks, and ambition that defined both Jordan and Nike’s futures forevermore. Not as showy as some of his earlier work, Air is a much more mature, assured effort from Affleck and easily his most accessible.

Affleck’s third film was a big anomaly in Oscar history. Up for seven awards, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, it was noticeable that Affleck would miss out on a Best Director nomination despite the acclaim – only the fourth time in Oscar history that has happened. Still, Argo is one of Affleck’s best efforts behind the camera, and we’re sure his Oscar as producer was welcome.
The film is adapted from a 1999 memoir by US C.I.A. operative Tony Mendez, as well as a 2007 Wired article written by Joshuah Bearman and tells of the “Canadian Caper”, a secret operation to get six US diplomats out of Tehran during the 1979-81 hostage crisis, under the guise of filming a sci-fi movie. Blending suspense, political drama, and Hollywood satire into a propulsive thriller sounds daunting, but Affleck pulls it off with confidence, maturity and aplomb.

2006’s Gone Baby Gone was Affleck’s first foray behind the camera, an adaptation of one of author Dennis Lehane’s most critically acclaimed novels. Set in Dorchester, a working-class neighbourhood of Boston, Massachusetts, the story follows two private investigators – played by Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan – who have been hired to find a four-year-old girl who has gone missing.
As they delve deeper into the mystery and the people it surrounds, the duo find a disturbing web of secrets, lies, and a multitude of criminal activity that takes a simple case into something much darker. Affleck’s assured hand makes for a riveting thriller about morality, parenthood, and the legal and morally questionable, asking whether what feels like the right thing is always the right thing to do. Brilliant support from Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris and Amy Ryan, too.

This might be a controversial choice for number one given the awards for Argo, but The Town is without question Affleck’s most confident, mature, and impressive work as a director thus far and deserves its place at the top of our list. Again set in Boston – specifically, Charlestown – where its close-knit community has a reputation for producing generations of bank robbers.
Affleck’s Doug leads one such gang with his childhood best friend, James (Jeremy Renner), and they carry out a robbery together, only for them to inadvertently take a hostage, Claire (Rebecca Hall). Doug and Claire become romantically involved, just as the FBI – led by Jon Hamm – close in on him and his life of crime. The action is explosive, the thrills tense and suspenseful, beautifully brought to life by Affleck and co. in a film that explores loyalty, family, redemption and escaping the past, some of the themes that the director continues to explore.
