Kavya Maran and Anirudh Ravichander are getting married. A wedding reception is set for 21 November in Chennai. Here we cover what is confirmed, what is not, and the political background of both families.
The Telangana Chief Minister’s Office posted on X on 16 October. It said Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran and his wife Kavery Maran met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at his Jubilee Hills home. They invited him to their daughter’s wedding reception.
The same post gave the date and place. The reception will be held in Chennai on 21 November.
Sun Group Chairman Shri Kalanithi Maran and his wife, Smt. Kavery Maran, met Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy at his residence in Jubilee Hills and invited him to the wedding reception of their daughter, Kavya Maran.

Neither Anirudh nor Kavya has made a public statement. The families have not spoken on record either. The confirmation came only through the invitation trail.
Invitations to Modi and Vijay
More invitations followed within hours. Sun News shared photos on X of Kalanithi Maran meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The post said he handed over the reception invitation. It said Anirudh’s parents, Lakshmi and Ravichander, were present with Anirudh.

Anirudh did not appear in the photos.
Sun News also shared photos of a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The post said Kalanithi Maran presented the invitation. It said Kavya and Anirudh were both present.

So far, three heads of government have been named as invitees. They are Modi, Vijay and Revanth Reddy.

The couple has not confirmed the relationship in words.
How the rumours grew
Talk about the pair began years ago. It grew after they were reportedly seen together at a dinner in Las Vegas. Neither of them confirmed or denied anything at the time.
In June 2025, a Reddit post made a claim. It said they had dated for over a year and planned to marry. It also said Rajinikanth had spoken to Kalanithi Maran about the match.
Anirudh replied on X. He wrote, “Marriage ah? lol… Chill out guys, please stop spreading rumours.”
In June 2026, his uncle, actor YG Mahendran, spoke on the KPTV channel. He said a wedding was coming and called it a sure thing. He said Kavya was a good match for his nephew. That interview was the strongest sign before the October posts.
Who is Kavya Maran?
Kavya is the daughter of Kalanithi and Kavery Maran. She is an Executive Director at Sun TV Network. Also, she is the CEO of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the IPL team owned by the Sun Group.
She is known to cricket fans for her presence at matches and auctions. Also, she looked after the group’s music, streaming and radio businesses. She rarely speaks about her private life.
Who is Anirudh Ravichander?
Anirudh was born on 16 October 1990 in Chennai. His father is actor Ravi Raghavendra. His mother, Lakshmi, is a classical dancer.
He studied piano through Trinity College of Music in London. He also took a diploma in sound engineering in Chennai.
His film credits include Leo, Indian 2, Vettaiyan, Vidaamuyarchi and Coolie. His music is heard in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema. He has also worked on Sun Pictures films such as Jailer. That tie between the two families in business predates the wedding news.
The Maran family and the DMK
Kavya’s political roots are well documented. They run through her grandfather and her uncle.
Her grandfather, Murasoli Maran, was a leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He was a nephew of M. Karunanidhi, the longtime DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Murasoli Maran served as a Lok Sabha MP from 1996 until 2003. He was Union Commerce and Industry Minister. He died on 23 November 2003.
Her uncle, Dayanidhi Maran, is a DMK MP. He holds the Chennai Central seat. He won it in 2004, 2009, 2019 and 2024. And, he lost in 2014. He has served as a Union Minister, including for communications and later for textiles.
Her father, Kalanithi, has not held office. He built the Sun network into a major media group.
A past rift inside the family
The Marans have had public conflicts. Karunanidhi accused his grand-nephews in 2008 of wronging his family in a Sun TV share buyback. The two sides later reconciled.
A new feud between the brothers surfaced in June 2025. It involved Kalanithi, Dayanidhi and their sister Anbukarasi. Then Chief Minister MK Stalin reportedly helped mediate. The terms were not made public.
Anirudh’s family and politics
Anirudh’s best known family link is Rajinikanth. The actor is related to him through his father’s side. YG Mahendran is also a relative.
Rajinikanth announced plans to enter politics in 2017. He dropped them in December 2020, citing his health. He never launched a party.
Anirudh holds no known party membership or office. His ties to politics come through relatives and through his work. He has scored films for Vijay, who is now Chief Minister.
A changed Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s politics shifted this year. Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, won the 2026 election. He took oath on 10 May 2026. It was the first state government led by a non-Dravidian party since 1967. The coalition includes the Congress as a partner.
The DMK now sits in opposition. Udhayanidhi Stalin is the Leader of the Opposition. Dayanidhi Maran remains a DMK MP.
This makes the invitation list notable. The family has strong DMK roots. Yet the Marans have invited the current Chief Minister, who defeated the DMK. They have also invited the Prime Minister and the Telangana Chief Minister, who belongs to the Congress.
