DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung wants to make Jakarta a cinema city like Busan in South Korea. The goal is not only to increase film production, but also to attract investment, open up employment opportunities, and mobilize community businesses
“In terms of this film, I really put my hopes on the Deputy Governor and his team to be able to do something that hopefully one day when talking about Jakarta, like people talk about Busan, film in South Korea,” said Pramono when opening the Jakarta Film Summit (JFS) at the Park Hyatt Hotel, Central Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, October 20.
Pramono is optimistic that Jakarta has the capital to develop into a film industry center, both nationally and in Southeast Asia.
One of the capital he mentioned was the city’s infrastructure. According to Pramono, the facilities owned by Jakarta are more complete than other areas.
He also referred to the Oxford Economics Global Cities 2026 ranking which placed Jakarta in position 140 out of 1,000 cities in the world.
In addition, Pramono said Jakarta was ranked 15th in the world’s best transportation, surpassing London.
With this capital, Pramono hopes that Jakarta will be able to build a stronger film industry. Starting from talent development, investment, production facilities, to international cooperation.
“The most important thing is to produce films that bring benefits and pride to the people of Jakarta. That is the most important and foremost,” he said.
The desire to make Jakarta a film city also received support from the Bank Indonesia (BI).
Head of the BI Representative Office for DKI Jakarta Province, Iwan Setiawan, said the film industry has vast economic potential. Its activities do not stop at the shooting process.
This industry involves scriptwriters, production crews, editing, to film distribution. Beyond that, there is a need for equipment, costumes, catering, transportation, lodging, and various small business services.
Therefore, the development of the film industry is expected to bring in investment as well as open up job and business opportunities for the community.
Iwan said that this potential is in line with the changing structure of Jakarta’s economy, which is increasingly based on the service sector.
“The development of creative economy is increasingly relevant in line with the transformation of Jakarta’s economy towards the service sector, which has increased from 53.95 percent in 2019 to 55.87 percent in 2025,” said Iwan.
To support the development of the film industry, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government together with the BI DKI Representative Office held the Jakarta Film Summit x Jakarta Economic Forum (JEF) 2026 on October 20-21.
One of the main discussions is how to make Jakarta more friendly for film production activities.
The agenda includes simplifying permits, providing production incentives, and utilizing regional assets as film-making locations and facilities.
Cooperation with film industry players in the Asian region is also part of the discussion.
The exchange of experiences is expected to help Jakarta attract more film production, both from within the country and abroad.
In addition to discussing industry policies, the event featured the screening of short films from the Jakarta Youth Film Festival (JYFF) competition, film discussions, and an exhibition of UMKM products.
The Jakarta Economic Forum also featured the work of the winners of the writing and article competition, as well as opening up space for participation by academics, young people, and business actors.
