The psychological thriller was presented out of competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in May, bringing together two of French cinema’s most recognisable names.
The film also stars Denis Ménochet, known internationally for Inglourious Basterds, alongside Argentine actor Leonardo Sbaraglia and Spanish actor Luis Zahera.
A disappearance reveals a troubled past
Set in a village in northern Spain, the story follows Jeanne, played by Cotillard, who is attempting to rebuild her life with her partner Daniel.
Her carefully constructed existence begins to unravel when her six-year-old godson, Mateo, mysteriously disappears.
As police suspicion turns towards Jeanne, she flees to France and seeks refuge in the community where she grew up, confronting a past she had tried to leave behind.
Meanwhile, Daniel refuses to believe she is responsible and sets out to find her before the authorities.
A new collaboration for Cotillard and Canet
Karma marks Canet’s return to the thriller genre, 20 years after his acclaimed 2006 film Tell No One, which earned him the César Award for Best Director.
The filmmaker has previously directed Cotillard in Little White Lies, Rock’n Roll and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom.
Speaking ahead of the Cannes premiere, Cotillard expressed particular enthusiasm about working with Denis Ménochet, describing the opportunity as the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition.
