The production marks the director’s 51st feature film and brings him back to Spain, where he previously made Vicky Cristina Barcelona, starring Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
The new project is expected to be a comedy, although further details about its storyline, cast and international release have yet to be confirmed.
A career spanning more than six decades
Allen is one of cinema’s most prolific filmmakers, with a career that includes Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters and Midnight in Paris.
He has received 24 Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture for Annie Hall.
His previous film, the French-language thriller Coup de Chance, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2023 and was shot in Paris with a predominantly French cast.
Spain’s growing attraction for international productions
The decision to film in Madrid provides another opportunity for the city to promote itself as a destination for international cinema.
Allen has frequently used European cities as the backdrop for his films, including London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona.
His return to production follows several years of uncertainty over whether he would continue directing, making the latest project another chapter in one of Hollywood’s longest filmmaking careers.
