Alex Garland’s Elden Ring adaptation reportedly has $200m budget, making it A24’s costliest film to date

A24’s upcoming Elden Ring film, directed by Alex Garland, reportedly has a budget of nearly $200 million, potentially making it the studio’s most expensive production to date.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal,the studio is spending close to $200 million to adapt FromSoftware’s acclaimed dark fantasy role-playing game, excluding marketing costs. Earlier reports had put the production budget at approximately $100 million.
The revised figure would place Elden Ring well ahead of A24’s previous high-budget productions.
The studio reportedly spent around $70 million on Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, while Garland’s Civil Warhad a reported budget of $50 million.
The investment reflects the scale of A24’s plans for the video game adaptation. Although the studio is known for independent films, the reported budget puts the project in a different financial category from many of its previous releases.
The original Elden Ring has sold more than 36 million copies, according to analyst Rhys Elliott, generating over $2 billion in revenue.
Its commercial performance could help attract audiences to the film, although the game’s success does not guarantee that the adaptation will achieve similar results at the box office.
The film stars Kit Connor, known for Heartstopper, and Cailee Spaeny, whose credits include Alien: Romulus. Production reportedly wrapped earlier in the summer, with the film scheduled to arrive in cinemas on March 3 2028.
George R.R. Martin is also involved as a producer. Martin previously helped FromSoftware develop the lore behind the original game, which follows a Tarnished protagonist exploring the Lands Between in a quest to become Elden Lord.
