Apple specifies three 48MP rear cameras and an 18MP autofocus front camera.

    2. 02

The 100 mm (4x) Telephoto is a specified camera; 200 mm (8x) is an optical-quality view.

    3. 03

The Main camera’s four aperture settings and shutter controls can shape a shot in different ways.

Reported strengths among the alternative phones vary by photo and video priority.

See how the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s three 48MP rear cameras, optical-quality zoom views and variable aperture work, plus what rival phones prioritize.

Apple specifies three 48MP rear cameras for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a variable-aperture main camera and video recording up to 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps on that camera. Its 2x and 8x settings are optical-quality views; the separately specified telephoto camera is 100 mm (4x). Reported assessments of other phones point to different strengths in still photography and video, rather than one clear all-purpose winner.

The iPhone’s cameras and zoom views

The three rear cameras cover different fields of view: a 13 mm Ultra Wide, a 24 mm Main camera and a 100 mm Telephoto. Apple also lists 18MP for the autofocus front camera. Its technical specifications distinguish those camera modules from two additional optical-quality views:

Camera or view Focal length Apple’s description
Ultra Wide 13 mm 48MP camera with a 120° field of view
Main 24 mm 48MP camera with four aperture settings
    Telephoto 100 mm (4x) 48MP camera at ƒ/2.8
    2x view 48 mm 12MP optical-quality view
    8x view 200 mm 12MP optical-quality view

So, does 8x mean there’s a separate 200 mm telephoto camera? No. Apple specifies a 100 mm (4x) Telephoto camera; 200 mm (8x) is an optical-quality view, not another listed camera module. Apple also lists a 16x optical-quality zoom range and up to 40x digital photo zoom.

For video, the Main camera records 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps. ProRes recording reaches 4K at 120 fps with external recording. Apple also lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock support. For stills, the camera system supports ProRAW, HEIF, JPEG, DNG and 48MP macro photography.

How aperture and shutter settings shape a shot

The Main camera offers ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Apple associates ƒ/1.48 with maximum light and ƒ/4.0 with maximum depth. The camera controls also include shutter speed, white balance and a histogram. Apple’s product page lists the aperture options and their intended effects.

In sample photographs, Patrick Holland of CNET reported starbursts around bright lights at ƒ/4. He also used half-second and one-second shutter settings to create motion blur. Those examples show how the controls can shape a particular image; they are not a guarantee that every scene will look the same.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: Full Camera Test (in NYC), by Mark Ellis Reviews

Mark Ellis Reviews’ video shows Ellis filming on New York City streets and in Times Square, then using the phone to cover an Apple event. In the video, Ellis says he values being able to capture what he needs without having to adjust every advanced setting.

    What other camera phones emphasize

Bloomberg Línea summarizes GSMArena’s assessments of seven alternatives, describing different strengths and trade-offs across photo and video. The summary attributes these evaluations to GSMArena:

Model Reported camera strengths and trade-offs
Oppo Find X9 Ultra Strong day and night photos, two telephoto cameras and good ultra-wide results; video sharpness is a limitation.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra Strong still photography and a reported 200MP telephoto with continuous optical zoom; video is described as weaker than its still photography.
vivo X300 Ultra Reported strengths include daylight photos, an 85 mm telephoto, a large ultra-wide sensor, Dolby Vision, Log recording and stabilization. The summary also notes weaker portrait definition and some softness in 4K video.
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL Good day and night results, a larger zoom-camera sensor and software features associated with Android 17; close-focus telephoto and video stabilization are cited as limitations.
Oppo Reno16 Pro Good daylight results across its rear cameras, a strong front camera and good main-camera video; low-light detail is described as an area to improve.
Xiaomi 17T Pro Reported configuration: 50MP Main, 50MP 5x Telephoto and 12MP Ultra Wide. The summary also describes strong day and night photos and video.
Realme GT 8 Pro Good day and night photos, with a telephoto suited to close-ups and distant subjects; video stabilization is identified as a weakness.

In selected scenes, CNET’s Patrick Holland noted differences in white balance and highlights between iPhone images and those from the Google Pixel 11 Pro XL. That is a comparison of particular scenes, while the GSMArena assessments summarized by Bloomberg Línea describe a broader mix of camera priorities.

Match the camera to the shots you take

For stills where telephoto reach is the priority, the reported 200MP continuous-zoom telephoto on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a notable point of comparison. For video, the iPhone’s listed formats include 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps on the Main camera, while the vivo X300 Ultra is reported to offer Dolby Vision and Log recording alongside stabilization. The same summary notes some softness in its 4K video. These differences make focal lengths, recording formats and the kinds of scenes you shoot more useful selection criteria than a single overall camera label.
