Kinza Hashmi, Zara Noor Abbas and Ushna Shah are set to share the screen in Saqib Khan and Badar Mehmood’s upcoming film Sheroes.
The poster for the film, which says it has “three women, three battles, one nation”, was released on Friday by Sindh Films — the Government of Sindh’s initiative to promote the province’s culture through film — which worked with Geo Films on the project.
In the poster, Abbas is seen aiming a pistol and wearing a bulletproof vest, possibly indicating her character is in law enforcement.
Shah’s character is shown wearing boxing gloves, so we can safely assume she’s in martial arts, likely as a professional or aspiring athlete. Hashmi’s character, although fashionably dressed, is harder to pin down without any obvious workwear or uniform.
The poster’s caption says the film has “three powerful stories of women who refuse to be defined by the world around them”. Could this be hinting at the narrative being anthological rather than one big story?
What’s clear is that the film leans heavily into women’s empowerment, something Sindh Films also did with its last feature film.
Mera Lyari, which was initially touted as a response to the Bollywood super-hit Dhurandhar, told the story of a football player (Ayesha Omar) forced to quit after injuries sustained through domestic violence left her unable to play.
She didn’t give up the game, instead going back to her roots in Karachi and coaching the area’s girls. The young girls themselves — the film’s protagonist being played by Dananeer Mobeen, with Trinette Lucas cast as her friend — had to overcome their own challenges at home to be able to play.
Mera Lyaripremiered at the UK Asian Film Festival on May 2 before starting its theatrical run in Pakistan on May 8. The movie had its television premiere on July 31.
