Neon has released the first teaser trailer for Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming drama which recounts the tumultuous period at the artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023, when CEO Sam Altman was fired and rehired within days.
Who’s In It?
Andrew Garfield (We Live in Time) stars as Altman, while Yura Borisov (Anora) plays Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who led the movement to boot Altman out of the company, Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) plays chief technology officer Mira Murati, Cooper Hoffman (The Long Walk) plays board chairman Greg Brockman, and Ike Barinholtz (The Studio) plays Elon Musk.
The script was penned by Simon Rich (Miracle Workers), who also produces alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, as well as Jennifer Fox and Guadagnino.
Amazon Dropped It, Neon Picked It Up
Originally, Artificial was slated to be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, but it was abruptly dropped in February…just days after Amazon announced plans to invest $50 billion in OpenAI.
Thankfully, Neon came to the rescue and picked up the project. Just last month, Garfield was asked if he was surprised that Amazon dropped the film.
“I was and I wasn’t. I think there are certain things that fit certain places and don’t fit other places and they [Amazon] were nothing but supportive and nothing but encouraging while we were making the film,” he said. “Luca has a really great relationship with them and I’ve developed a lovely relationship with them as well. I’m grateful that they’ve helped the film to find the home that it was meant to find.“
Cooper Hoffman added he was surprised that Amazon even picked it up in the first place. “When they dropped it, it was kinda like, ‘Oh, yeah, that kinda actually makes sense,’ but then it got picked up by Neon, which I’m so happy about,” he said. “I love Neon and I couldn’t be more happy.“
When Will Artificial Be Released?
Artificial will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5 and will also screen at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11. For the rest of us, Neon has slated the film for a December 25 release in theaters.
