The subject and executive producer of a stunning Australian documentary will be in Deniliquin next week for a special screening.
Both are film legends in their own right.
Jill Bilcock is a film editor, considered one of the world’s leading film artists and who has been Academy Award nominated.
She’s worked on classics like Strictly Ballroom, Muriel’s Wedding, Moulin Rouge!, Red Dog, and The Dressmaker, andit was her brave editing choices in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+Juliet that changed the look of cinema the world over.
It inspired one Hollywood critic to dub her editing style as that of a “Russian serial killer on crack”.
Executive producer on the documentary on her life and career, Jill Bilcock: Dancing the Invisible, is former Finley womanSue Maslin AO.
Maslin is a recipient of the 2026 National Cinema Pioneer of the Year Award and produced The Dressmaker,written by her school friend and former Jerilderie woman Rosalie Ham.
Both icons will be present for a screening of the documentary next Friday, September 25, and will also be involved in a Q&A session.
With a back-story as colourful and surprising as her films, and featuring commentary from Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Shekhar Kapur, Phil Noyce and Fred Schepisi, this documentary is a wonderful insight into Jill Bilcock’s life, the art of editing and the profound impact she has had on storytelling.
Friday’s screening is free thanks to funding from South West Arts and Create NSW, and support from Country Arts Support Program (CASP) and Edward River Council.
It will be hosted at the Deniliquin Town Hall. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
