Instagram has begun rolling out an AI assistant within Edits, its video-editing app that competes with CapCut, to all users in the US. Unlike generic AI writing or content tools, the assistant is designed to understand a creator’s own account by drawing on Instagram metrics such as views, retention, likes, shares and comments, along with platform-wide trends and the interests of their specific audience.
Creators can ask the assistant what resonated most with their audience during a particular month, why one Reel performed better than another or <a href="https://cinemamix360.com/2026/10/01/naza-filmmakers-on-what-they-learned-making-the-doc-and-the-backlash-it-received/” title=”'NAZA' filmmakers on what they learned making the doc and the backlash it received”>what they should create next. It can also suggest video concepts, hooks, captions and scripts based on a creator’s own successful content, analyse different versions of “trial reels” and recommend trending audio aligned with their niche.
“One thing we heard consistently: creators want a tool that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them,” said Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app at Meta. “Edits assistant does the digging for you. The creative calls are still yours.”
Meta said it developed the tool over several months with input from a council of creators. The assistant is free to use with a daily prompt limit, while higher usage is available through a Meta One subscription.
The launch follows Meta’s first preview of the tool at an invite-only creator event in June 2026, where it also teased an upcoming Edits desktop app. It comes shortly after YouTube announced its own conversational video-editing tool, although the two take different approaches. YouTube’s tool focuses more on assisting with the editing process itself, while Instagram’s Edits assistant is positioned as a performance-analytics companion rather than a creative collaborator.
