Give us the “elevator pitch” for what you do at work.
I help faculty and staff in the Faculty of Native Studies build confidence in using our digital tools. Drawing on my background in education and human-centred design, I empower people to navigate platforms such as Canvas, explore practical ways to use AI and streamline everyday workflows. My goal is to improve our digital dexterity by making technology feel useful and approachable, so it supports people instead of getting in their way.
What is your first U of A memory?
Surviving the legendary Butterdome registration lines to pick up my student ID card and course schedule, feeling equal parts overwhelmed and thrilled to be starting my journey at the U of A.
If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?
Definitely a film studies course. I have a deep obsession with watching films (good, bad or ugly). Getting the chance to break down visual and audio storytelling techniques, explore the history of different genres and analyze why certain films resonate so deeply is right up my alley.
If you could show a visitor a unique spot or experience on campus, what would it be?
Room at the Top (RATT), for the phenomenal view of Edmonton’s river valley and downtown.
What’s a kind gesture a colleague has done for you?
Listening. Over the years, I’ve been blessed with colleagues who have offered this simple yet powerful kindness by taking the time to hear me out as I navigate challenges and opportunities.
You have to give a presentation about something unrelated to work with zero preparation. What’s it about?
WhyDie Hardis 100 per cent a Christmas movie!
If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?
Choosing just one is nearly impossible! While it would’ve been amazing to be on that L.A. street corner for U2’s 1987 rooftop show, ultimately my pick is Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York. Sitting in that candlelit studio as Kurt Cobain poured his soul into those haunting songs would’ve been unforgettable, especially knowing he passed away shortly after.
What’s one book, podcast, movie, TV show or playlist you would recommend?
I recently started listening to podcasts again and one I recommend isSearch Engine, hosted by PJ Vogt. He takes these hyper-specific, almost bizarre questions about tech culture and human behaviour, and unravels them through investigative journeys. PJ also co-createdReply All, which is still one of my all-time favourites and well worth diving into today.
What’s a hill you’re willing to die on?
Dark mode isn’t an esthetic choice. It’s an act of self-care for your eyes and your battery life.
Do you have any upcoming projects or initiatives you are looking forward to at work?
Right now, it’s all about setting the stage for a great fall semester! I’m working with Native Studies instructors to set up their digital courses, so they can focus entirely on teaching and engaging with students.
