Cut to Black Prize Opens 2026–27 Screenwriting Round With $10,000 Grand Prize and Industry Exposure During Judging

    Cut to Black Prize

Invitation-only competition combines blind script evaluation, a Hollywood producer meeting for the winner, and additional visibility for entered screenplays.

Cut to Black Prize pairs selective, blind judging with industry consideration during the competition, creating value for writers beyond the final announcement.”— Thomas Haldeman
LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Cut to Black Prize has opened its 2026–27 screenwriting competition, inviting qualified writers to seek a place in a curated contest that will award one winner $10,000, a trip to Hollywood, and a scheduled meeting with a producer or development executive. Sponsored by Call Sheet Media, LLC, the new round also introduces an added avenue for discovery: participating scripts will be included in the company’s script database while judging is underway.

Unlike competitions based on unrestricted entry, Cut to Black Prize requires an invitation. Writers may request consideration through a pre-screening process, and approved entrants receive access to the submission system. The organizer deliberately limits the field and uses blind judging, placing the emphasis on the screenplay’s storytelling, characters, execution, and potential for the screen. Entry remains subject to capacity, and a submission window may end early when that limit is reached.

The competition is designed to recognize accomplished work across genre and format rather than favor a single style of storytelling. Original, unproduced English-language feature screenplays, television pilots, and short scripts are eligible within the stated length guidance. Entrants retain ownership of their material under the official rules, which also set out limited permissions for contest-related publicity.

One of the new round’s most significant features extends beyond the judging process. According to the competition’s published entry information, each entered screenplay will be added to Call Sheet Media’s script database, making the work available for consideration by industry professionals while it competes. This gives participation a potential visibility benefit separate from advancing to the finals. Listing is an opportunity to be considered; it is not a commitment to representation, purchase, financing, or production.

For the eventual champion, the prize is deliberately focused. In addition to the $10,000 cash award, the winner receives round-trip economy airfare to Los Angeles, two or three consecutive nights of standard hotel accommodations, and a scheduled in-person general meeting of at least 60 minutes with a producer or development executive. The trip package has an approximate retail value of up to $2,500, bringing the advertised total prize value to as much as $12,500. Travel conditions, eligibility verification, taxes, and the possibility of an alternative arrangement are governed by the official rules.

The new round follows the competition’s August 14, 2026, announcement naming Tim Gnazale’s DINOSAURS ARE SINGING as Grand Prize Winner. The screenplay, a drama involving a celebrated Hollywood sound editor and his estranged son, was recognized by the competition for its command of structure, character, dialogue, and emotional storytelling. The published results also identified finalists and semifinalists from the previous round, establishing a record of selected work as the next competition cycle proceeds.

The judging process uses published weighted criteria: storytelling and originality account for 30 percent of the score, characterization and emotional stakes for 25 percent, craft — including structure, pacing, dialogue, and formatting — for 25 percent, and market potential for 20 percent. Evaluators include producers, professional screenwriters, script analysts, and development executives selected by the organizer. The highest composite score determines the potential winner, subject to the contest’s verification and tie-breaking rules.

Writers must be at least 18 years old and meet the eligibility requirements in the official rules. An invitation is required before entry. Writers who do not yet have one can request consideration at https://cuttoblackprize.com/invite.html. Approved entrants submit one screenplay, unless otherwise authorized, as a properly formatted PDF without identifying information, using their private entry access. Fees are nonrefundable except where required by law.

Complete rules, prize conditions, and entry details are available at https://cuttoblackprize.com/. The invitation request and entry pages are currently accessible, but access codes and remaining places are subject to availability.

Cut to Black Prize is the entertainment industry’s only invitation-only screenwriting competition. It recognizes original screenwriting through a deliberately limited field, blind professional judging, and a single Grand Prize combining a cash award with a Hollywood trip and producer or development executive meeting. The current round also provides an opportunity for scripts to be considered through Call Sheet Media’s database while judging proceeds
