Artificial intelligence is moving beyond short, visually impressive clips into the more demanding territory of filmmaking, with ‘Grok Odyssey’ offering an early test of whether the technology can recreate the scale, drama and emotional depth of a literary classic.

Announced by Elon Musk in July 2026, the project aims to adapt Homer’s ancient Greek epic, ‘The Odyssey’, using Grok Imagine, the video-generation technology developed by his artificial intelligence company.

Musk had promised a full-length adaptation before the end of the year, describing his ambition as a historically accurate interpretation faithful to the spirit of the original work. The project entered a new phase on October 23, when its first seven-minute episode was released in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker.

The opening instalment draws on elements of the epic, including Odysseus, his family and the Greek expedition to Troy, using AI-generated imagery, characters and cinematic sequences to recreate the world of ancient Greece.

The experiment, however, has received a mixed reception. Reviews have acknowledged the potential of some realistic-looking shots while questioning the dialogue, editing, character continuity and the narrative’s ability to sustain interest.

These shortcomings underline a persistent challenge facing AI filmmaking: producing an impressive image is considerably easier than telling a compelling story.

A successful feature requires more than convincing landscapes, elaborate costumes and dramatic battle scenes. Characters must remain consistent, dialogue must feel natural, and the narrative must develop with sufficient emotional weight to hold an audience’s attention. The first episode has yet to establish whether AI can bring these elements together over the duration of a full-length film.

‘Grok Odyssey’ also raises questions about the future of creative production, particularly the extent to which artificial intelligence can handle tasks traditionally performed by screenwriters, directors, actors and editors.
