Andy Serkis has cleared up speculation surrounding Stephen Colbert’s upcoming Lord of the Rings project, confirming that he will not be directing the film despite leading another major return to JRR Tolkien’s Middle earth.

The British actor and filmmaker addressed the subject during a BBC interview while promoting the UK cinema release of Animal Farm. Serkis is currently directing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas in December 2027, but made it clear that his involvement does not extend to Colbert’s separate project.

Asked about the new Lord of the Rings film Shadow of the Past, which has been written by longtime Tolkien fan and television host Stephen Colbert, Serkis offered a brief but revealing response.

“I think that that post has been taken, put it that way,” Serkis said, confirming another filmmaker has already secured the directing role.

He also expressed enthusiasm for the project despite not being involved behind the camera.

“That’s going to be a fascinating story too. I know it’s something that Stephen’s very, very excited about being part of.”

While Serkis stopped short of revealing who will direct Shadow of the Past, his comments appear to end speculation that he could oversee both upcoming Lord of the Rings films.

Instead, Serkis remains focused on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which expands Peter Jackson’s cinematic universe. Jackson is producing the film, while Serkis reprises his iconic performance as Gollum alongside directing duties.

During the interview, Serkis shared new details about where the story fits within Tolkien’s timeline. He explained that the film takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, exploring a crucial period in Gollum’s life before the events of the original trilogy.

According to Serkis, the story examines Gollum’s psychology and history while following Gandalf’s growing determination to uncover the true origins of the mysterious ring discovered by Bilbo Baggins.

“The hunt takes place in two different dimensions really and that’s about as far as I can say at the moment,” he said, stopping short of revealing additional plot details.

The project has assembled a high profile cast that includes Anya Taylor Joy, Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan and Leo Woodall. Original trilogy stars Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are also returning as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf respectively.

Earlier this year, Serkis additionally confirmed that Aragorn will be portrayed by a new actor rather than Viggo Mortensen, reflecting the younger timeline explored in the story.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas in December 2027.
