Sharjah24: FANN Media Discovery Platform organized the second edition of the Global Children and Youth Film Congress, as part of the 13th Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth.
The congress, hosted by the House of Wisdom in Sharjah, brought together a distinguished group of artists, filmmakers, academics, and specialists. They discussed ways to advance the film industry, enhance inclusion for people with disabilities, and ensure equal opportunities across all sectors of the field.
A session was run as part of the congress programme looking at how to promote inclusion in the film industry and the difficulties that people of determination face in the industry. The session looked at the importance of adapting both the production and screening of film to meet the specific needs of people of determination. There was a strong emphasis on the need to give people of determination the opportunity to speak for themselves and to express their own experiences and concerns, as well as the need to see them represented both in front of the camera and in the industry itself.
The session focused on the way cinema can be used to challenge the stereotypes that exist around people with a determination by showing them as people with real lives, real capabilities and real interests (rather than just people with a disability).
