A man was riding his bicycle to get bail for his brother. The matter was urgent. Not long after, he was stopped by the police on trumped-up charges, beaten, and his bail money was stolen. He went to the local jail to report the crime: but when he told the officer he hadn’t been given his badge number, he knew he was getting nowhere. This is a painful beginning Rebel RidgeJeremy Saulnier’s latest direct connection to Netflix RamboThis is a thriller from the director of Blue Ruin, but if there’s one thing Solina is good at, it’s ratcheting up the tension. There is a shadow Jack Reacher It’s a constant thread throughout the film – the lone curious, hunky protagonist, brilliantly played by the breakout Aaron Pierre, pitted against the small-town cops who work together to protect a get-rich-quick scheme. Simple and never confusing.
is for Rebel RidgeTo its credit, the film creates an unprecedented level of tension. The scene in which Pierre’s Terry Richmond breaks out of a police station with hostages is deftly executed to avoid escalating the situation and lest the loud, loud director fall victim to it. Don Johnson is the perfect foil to the protagonist cop. AnnaSophia Robb becomes involved in the scheme and plays the role of Terry’s sympathetic helper. Each actor plays their standard roles to perfection – and the small-town atmosphere creates a sense of easy-to-participate charm. It’s incredibly cynical and incredibly restrained, not quite the gore-fest that The Green Room was, but there are all the right reasons not to be – for Solina, without resorting to murder. Making a film is a personal challenge. The final scene of a modern western doesn’t feature a shootout with both sides talking about deescalating the tension, and if there’s one role that Johnson is very good at, it’s that of the corrupt Southerner in The Official. He played him a little too well for me – but opposite him, Pierre gave a star-worthy performance worthy of the big screen – he owned every scene he was in and his character’s intelligence was almost Make him the calmest person in the room. Our bad guy is introduced to them when he starts to realize he’s out of their depth – he has a Wikipedia page, he’s constantly disarming people and trying not to hurt them unless provoked.
Interestingly, Jean Terry was never a righteous Reacher type from the start – he wanted to win without a fight. He wanted the police to keep the money in exchange for his brother. It’s a compromise that happens everywhere. but Rebel Ridge Showing that for some people, compromise is never enough. It would be interesting to see what would have happened if John Boyega had stayed on the project, but Pierre plays the role of Terry brilliantly; though I wish his physical presence was worthy of an action movie Rebel Ridge Still independent. As Stephen King said, this is a Rambo for the thinking man – an adrenaline rush that may then lead to a meltdown in the middle of the film, but you can’t help but admire its deliberate de-escalation of the situation before it escalates Need to even start. Anything further and the ending adds to the believability. In Solena’s hands it is presented with skill and care.
