Filmmaking bodies hit out at “one-dimensional” Venice lineup for lack of female directors
Italian and European film organisations have published a statement criticising the Venice Film Festival for the lack of Italian female filmmakers in its official selection, calling the lineup “one-dimensional” and “troubling”.

Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera on 2026 lineup, lack of female and studio films
Venice’s artistic director Alberto Barbera unveiled the festival’s lineup yesterday (July 23), including films by Nanni Moretti, Martin McDonagh and Lee Chang-dong.
The 2026 Venice Film Festival has unveiled a programme with a stronger focus on independent and auteur-driven cinema, featuring fewer films from major Hollywood studios than in recent years. Despite that, organisers expect another star-studded edition when the festival runs from 2 to 12 September.
Florian Zeller’s thriller Bunker, Martin McDonagh’s black comedy Wild Horse Nine and Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Loveare among the films set to world premiere on the Lido at the Venice Film Festival, running September 2-12.
