While it was announced last November, Paramount’s next Star Trek feature film project hasn’t yielded much news. That all changed today in San Diego when writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley provided an update at Comic-Con, speaking publicly about the project for the first time and giving some much needed info.
Trekking into the future
Shortly after taking over the studio last summer, the new Paramount Skydance team put an end to all active Star Trek film projects in development (including the decade-long attempt at a fourth Kelvin movie), handing over the task to bring Trek back to the big screen to the pair behind Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. On Thursday at Comic-Con, Goldstein and Daley appeared in Hall H along with Zach Cregger (Weapons) for a “Directors on Directing” panel, hosted by Collider.
Soon after the panel started, Collider’s Steven Weintraub solicited a Star Trek movie progress report from John Francis Daley, who told the crowd:
“I think we can say the script is in progress, and that we’re very excited about it. And I think people will be surprised. I really can’t say anything else other than that.”
But luckily they did reveal a few more bits, with Jonathan Goldstein adding:
“I think we’ve said in the past, and it’s been reported, that it won’t be the characters that you’ve seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So there’ll be a new sort of take on that, and I think it’ll probably be a little further into the future than we’ve been before.”
They didn’t clarify exactly how far in the future they may be talking about, but it’s quite possible the comment was within the context of the feature films, which were set in the 23rd and 24th centuries of the TOS and TNG eras. The movie duo may not be factoring in the more recent Paramount+ TV series that have jumped into the 25th (Picard) and 32nd centuries (Academy and Discovery).

Why Trek?
Goldstein then answered the specific question as to why they took on this new project, as Paramount has struggled to get the film franchise going for the last decade. He the Hall H con-goers:
“Everything we take on, what draws us to it, is the opportunity to do a different spin on something that you’ve seen done before. And that’s our hope with this: is to satisfy the fans, but also bring people in who may not consider themselves lovers of Star Trek and surprise them.”
Is big screen Trek finally happening?
In April, when outlining future plans, Paramount Studio’s new chiefs mentioned the Star Trek movie as one of the projects in active development. At that event (and pretty much any place with a mic), CEO David Ellison has committed the company to upping theatrical distribution to 15 films each year (30 if the deal for Warner Bros. goes through). Ellison (who was an executive producer on the last two Trek movies) has brought up Star Trek several times since Skydance took over a year ago, citing it as one of the key franchises of his vision of a Paramount/Warner Bros. megastudio.
Goldstein and Daley are currently working on the Cold War action comedy Mayday starring Ryan Reynolds and Sir Kenneth Branagh. That film arrives in early September, so optimistically, maybe the pair can move past the script stage and get a Star Trek film into production by the end of the year.
