The Indian men’s hockey team will begin its campaign in the second phase of the 2026 Hockey World Cup against co-hosts and reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Saturday, August 22.
India enter the second phase with no carryover points after losing to England in the opening phase. The Netherlands, meanwhile, carry three points into Pool E after beating Argentina, who also progressed from Pool A.
With only two matches to play in the second phase and the top two teams advancing to the semifinals, India have virtually no room for error. Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates will need to produce a strong performance against one of the tournament favourites before facing Argentina in their final Pool E match.
A stern test of India’s consistency
India have shown attacking quality in the tournament but have struggled to maintain control after taking the lead. They led Pakistan 3-0 and 4-1 before eventually winning 5-3, while a 2-1 half-time lead against England slipped away as India conceded twice in the third quarter before losing 2-4.
The Netherlands, in contrast, won all three of their first-phase matches convincingly, beating New Zealand 5-1, Argentina 3-1 and Japan 4-1.
Against one of the most dangerous attacking sides in world hockey, India cannot afford defensive lapses. Captain Harmanpreet Singh has been in outstanding form with five goals, while Abhishek has also impressed, scoring two field goals against Pakistan.
India will also draw confidence from their recent record against the Netherlands. They defeated the Dutch 3-2 in their final FIH Pro League match in Rotterdam in June after losing the opening game by the same scoreline. Jugraj Singh, Abhishek and Rajinder Singh scored in that victory and are all part of India’s World Cup squad.

Netherlands bring home advantage and strong form
The Netherlands enter the second phase as one of the favourites for the title after an unbeaten first phase. They will also have the advantage of playing in front of a packed home crowd at the 10,000-capacity Wagener Stadium.
The Dutch have won the World Cup three times, including their maiden title at the same venue in 1973, when they defeated India in the final. They also lifted the trophy in 1990 and 1998.
Their high-intensity attacking game and ability to create repeated circle entries and penalty corners will pose a major challenge for India. The Dutch are also well aware of India’s capabilities, having faced them in the FIH Pro League.
Netherlands captain Thierry Brinkman has acknowledged the threat posed by India and Harmanpreet.
“India is a dangerous team as we have played against them in the FIH Pro League. On their day they can beat any team and their captain Harmanpreet Singh looks in top form,” Brinkman said after the Netherlands’ win over Japan.
India will therefore need to be disciplined in possession, sharper defensively and more clinical in attack if they are to upset the Netherlands and strengthen their semifinal hopes.
